Publisher's summary

Frank Machianno is a late-middle-aged ex-surf bum who runs a bait shack on the San Diego waterfront. An affable Italian with a love of people and life, he's a stand-up businessman, devoted father, and a beloved fixture in the community.

He's also a hit man - specifically, a retired hit man. Back in the day, when he was one of the most feared members of the West Coast Mafia, he was known as Frankie Machine. Frank consigned his Mob ties to the past years ago, which is where he wants them to stay. But a favor being called in now by the local boss is one Frank can't refuse, and soon he's sucked back into the treacherous currents of his former life. Someone from the past wants him dead. He has to figure out who and why, and he has to do it fast.

Critic reviews

"Elmore Leonard fans who have not yet discovered Winslow will be delighted by his fourth thriller....Winslow has created plausible characters and taut scenes of suspense that will keep readers turning pages." (Publishers Weekly)

A Fun Listen

Any additional comments?

This was an enjoyable, quick listen. I liked Frankie and thought the author did a good job of building the character. I'll try another by this author.

Very good story not for faint of heart

I very much enjoyed this story. I particularly liked the way real incidents, names, facts were woven in to give the overall story a very believable feel. I am sure some will find the language and graphic violence offensive but for me it fit the story. We are talking about organized crime here after all.

it's ok

I did finish it, but it was decent, not great. Doesn't make me want more from the author or reader.

Resonates with realism and a touch of nostalgia

loved it grew up surfing the long board in the 60's and knew all the places mentioned along with the mob vernacular of the day. The process of looking at life in the rear view mirror is great.

An Unexpected Delight

My expectations going into this book were along the lines of, "OK this will be something to listen to while on the treadmill". I was very pleasantly surprised to find it was a well written story with enough character development to engage me and a performance that was very well suited to the book.

Good book, mediocre narrator

I really love Don Winslow's writing and, although this is not one of his best, the plot kept me highly entertained. The narrator, OTOH, made me highly irritated with his constant mispronunciation of common words and place

Really Great read

First found Dawn Patrol and loved it so looked for more by Winslow. Heard good things about this book but held back as I am not into gangster stories but eventually acquired it and found it excellent. Not from SD but visited a few times and love area and surfed in my younger days so it enhances the story for me to have the setting of these books in SD. Characters are solid and though it is basically a mob kind of story it speaks to other levels most of us relate to like character and lack of, youth and getting old. It's a good read for many reasons and has several layers...at least for me.
