Publisher's summary

A canine Search and Rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness in this riveting #1 New York Times bestseller from Nora Roberts.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life - a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude necessary to rebuild her life with her three loyal Labs. But all that changes on the day intensely private wood artist Simon Doyle barrels up her drive with an out-of-control puppy, desperate for her help.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...

Critic reviews

"[T]he romance is finely done, with Roberts's trademark banter lighting up the page. Fiona and Simon are the main attraction, but the setting and the supporting characters - with paws and without - provide a vivid backdrop." (Publishers Weekly)

“Search-and-rescue dogs are a focal point of this wonderful tale of love and adventure. Roberts has a marvelous ability to blend in the perfect amounts of character drama, realistic romance and chilling suspense. The result - an unputdownable read! Roberts again proves why her name is synonymous with excellence.” (RT Book Reviews)

“Strong romantic suspense.... The serial killer subplot is not new, as the copycat has been done before, but Nora Roberts makes it seem fresh with her incredible writing skill as she uses the Search and Rescue canines as key elements in the exciting story line. Readers will enjoy Ms. Roberts’ entertaining Puget Sound thriller.” (Midwest Book Review)

Best Nora Robert's book so far

Loved the story. It was full of humor and had a great plot. The narrator was awesome! Her tone fit well and I loved how she delivered the subtle lines of humor.

Entertaining book honors rescue dogs

If you could sum up The Search in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, somewhat predictable

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Search?

Loved the searches, my favorite was the search of a hostage.

Any additional comments?

This was a fun book, with action and humor. I loved the character development of the dogs. That was a nice surprise.

Way too much information about dog training

Any additional comments?

I should have listened to the reviews on this one. There was WAYYYYYYY to much unnecessary crap about dog training. I enjoyed the story a whole lot, but endless blather about teaching dogs to sit and stay was just too much.

Nora Roberts always brings it!

I've yet to read a Nora Roberts novel and be disappointed. I'm very much a fan of her romantic suspense genre. This is no exception. There is A LOT about dogs and training. I have three dogs, so I didn't mind it and fell in love with her dogs.
The end could have been more dramatic, so that's why I gave it 4 stars. It was a long time of build up and I just expected something more.

Nice read

I enjoyed this book a lot. I found Fiona to be very likeable, relatable and even admirable. Simon is a grump, but oddly enough still likeable and I really enjoyed the dog and search and rescue angle.

Married on Orcas Is., love dogs but..,!

In my opinion, not at all one of Roberts’ best. When she hits it really well (Witness, for instance), some of her stand alone books are just terrific, fascinating, engaging and represent a solid background that supports the storylines. I found The Search to not at all be up to that level: dragged; love interests not believable nor engaging; likewise, supporting characters about the same — all in all pretty “meh”!
And as another reviewer pointed out, if one wants to put one’s best friend in real jeopardy, toss them a rawhide chew!! Those things kill dogs regularly, in great agony!
Narrator I found to be okay.
But even the facts that I’ve spent a lot of time on and around Orcas, adore dogs…none of those factors made The Search more than a somewhat irritating time filler.
