Publisher's summary

A canine Search and Rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness in this riveting #1 New York Times bestseller from Nora Roberts.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life - a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude necessary to rebuild her life with her three loyal Labs. But all that changes on the day intensely private wood artist Simon Doyle barrels up her drive with an out-of-control puppy, desperate for her help.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...

Critic reviews

"[T]he romance is finely done, with Roberts's trademark banter lighting up the page. Fiona and Simon are the main attraction, but the setting and the supporting characters - with paws and without - provide a vivid backdrop." (Publishers Weekly)

“Search-and-rescue dogs are a focal point of this wonderful tale of love and adventure. Roberts has a marvelous ability to blend in the perfect amounts of character drama, realistic romance and chilling suspense. The result - an unputdownable read! Roberts again proves why her name is synonymous with excellence.” (RT Book Reviews)

“Strong romantic suspense.... The serial killer subplot is not new, as the copycat has been done before, but Nora Roberts makes it seem fresh with her incredible writing skill as she uses the Search and Rescue canines as key elements in the exciting story line. Readers will enjoy Ms. Roberts’ entertaining Puget Sound thriller.” (Midwest Book Review)

Married on Orcas Is., love dogs but..,!

In my opinion, not at all one of Roberts’ best. When she hits it really well (Witness, for instance), some of her stand alone books are just terrific, fascinating, engaging and represent a solid background that supports the storylines. I found The Search to not at all be up to that level: dragged; love interests not believable nor engaging; likewise, supporting characters about the same — all in all pretty “meh”!
And as another reviewer pointed out, if one wants to put one’s best friend in real jeopardy, toss them a rawhide chew!! Those things kill dogs regularly, in great agony!
Narrator I found to be okay.
But even the facts that I’ve spent a lot of time on and around Orcas, adore dogs…none of those factors made The Search more than a somewhat irritating time filler.

That was me

When I was 8 I was kidnapped. His MO was to take kids and put them on an alter for worship and bury them alive in a body bag. I was the one that got away.
This book is the first story I’ve heard that’s even close to what I experienced. It gave me chills. I got through it and continue to heal from it. I’m 61 years old now.

Terrible Narrator

I Love Nora Robert's books and every book I have listened to seemed to have an amazing narrator that feels like they have been chosen for the roles being read. Unfortunately this book's narrator totally missed the mark. She's probably good reading children's books but definitely not these types of books.
I finished the book although It was really hard to. I thought that maybe she would grow on me and I would get accustomed of hearing grown ups speak like elementary school children but nope, didn't happen. I did not like the book but I feel like this is probably due to the narrator.

Good story

The story was good but at times it spent more time on training the dogs than it did their relationship. Great narrative and overall a good listen.

Simon and Fiona

Fiona survived a serial killer and now works as a dog trainer/search and rescue volunteer. Simon is an artist and is in desperate need of a dog trainer because his dog Jaws kept chewing things up. As Simon and Fiona grew closer, someone who was kidnapping and killing the same way the killer that Fiona had escaped. I originally gave The Search 5 stars. There is a lot of information about dog training, but I was okay it. I really enjoyed the thriller plot, and the romance between Simon and Fiona. The story really is 4.5 stars.
