America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.
But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....
It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.
Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

Iam a new Audible member. I love the selection of books. Its easier than strolling around a library. I find my self chosing books and catagories that I never thought of.
I prefer the audio version. It brings life to the story. I even wanted to by the hardcopy to read along but I dont have time for that. I listen during work and gardening. It makes time pass smoothly. The sound effects and characters make it more interesting and draws me in. I saw the poster ad for this book on the DC Metro and I immediately downloaded it. Also.... I live in DC so I particularly enjoyed the name dropping of the cities and companys throughout the metro area. I hope he's reading this review with a smile!!! # thumbsup!
Yes....not wanting to miss a single sentence.I needed complete silence around me. So I used headphones :-)
Super Agent Vance LOL
Made me speak outloud during some gripping moments
Keep you involed from the beginning. Hardly ever a dull moment, did not want to stop listening until end. Would highly recommended if you like adventure, intrigue and many plots.
There isn't much I can say about this that I haven't said about Baldacci, Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy. Each novel is different but combine the author and narrators and I have yet to listen to one I didn't enjoy. I missed this in order of books and finally got to listen to the one where Will saved the President. That's as close as I get to a book report.
It is insulting to an adult to add cheesy sound effects like gun shots, tires squealing, sirens, etc. It reminded me of a child's book with the buttons down the side- irritating. The two narrators feel disconnected- like they were recorded separate and spliced together. Luckily I've been with Audible a couple of years and know that this is not normal. I got a refund. I also don't think I'm a Baldacci fan. This was the first book by him I've tried. It was only so so- not good.
Again I did enjoy this novel but in comparison to last few novels I've read just a little less engaging
Retired former trial and corporate lawyer practicing his craft for over 40 years. Loves legal thrillers, mysteries, and dog related stories.
Ron McLarty is an exellent reader and Baldacci continues to crank out novels that are still entertaining. This had an interesting plot with some good twists and turns which made for an intersesting listen.
This is a well written book. The plot is great and slowly unfolds. Great storyline.
The complex plot.
