Publisher's summary

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

Living a new life on a quiet lake in central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He's been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes.

Now Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean's case. And he needs a friend - especially since a series of macabre killings has brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he's tried hard to forget.

As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a shocking truth: that the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making - and are a long way from over....

Split second review David Baldacci

I started this book years ago, and left it. Now, I returned to it to experience what I missed. King and Maxwell make a great team! This story demands that you give it your full attention when you are reading it. Lest you miss the heart pounding, edge of your seat moments. So cleverly woven together, with an action packed story and ending.

Good Book with skipping

Good book and story although Chapter 20 has some audio issues that were annoying - skipping, etc.

Great story

I didn’t like that there were no female voices like other books by the same author.

Plot Twists

Very nicely written with surprizing plot twists and revelations throughout. I found the narration distracting at first, because the narrator has a strange inflection when reading questions. It was odd to hear each character use the same quaint inflection. As the story became more involved, however, it was less bothersome. More diffentiation in the characters speaking would have made the story less confusing.

Length of time confusing

Loved this 1st in the King & Maxwell series. However, the Length of Time listed is 18 hrs. and 35 Min. The Epilogue ended at 11 hrs. 25 Min. then proceeded into a part of the book that occurred about 1/3 of the way into it. We didn't listen to what appeared to be a repeat. Has anyone else experienced this?
