Publisher's summary

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

Living a new life on a quiet lake in central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He's been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes.

Now Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean's case. And he needs a friend - especially since a series of macabre killings has brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he's tried hard to forget.

As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a shocking truth: that the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making - and are a long way from over....

Definitely a surprise around every turn!

David Baldacci lets the reader ponder the possible outcomes in this one and Scott Brick does not disappoint in his narration.

good story

This book kept my interest right up to the very end. A little far out but still a good story. Scott Brick is an excellent narrator and keeps you involved. I recommend this book to anyone.

Good listen

As others said, the reason for the crimes was a little out there. It got to the point where I had to go back a few times because there were no many characters and suspects involved in the plot, that I kept losing track.

Enjoyable fast paced listen though.

Excellent Story Read By Ultra Hyper Narrator

I enjoyed this story very much. Very creative twists and turns and a good finale. Credible and sympathetic characters. I am becoming a fan of Baldacci's works.

BUT . . . what was with the hyperactive, don't take a breath narrative of Scott Brick ?

Listeningtohisdeliveryofthisstorywasjustaboutasdifficultastryingtoreadthissentence !

The first 3 hours were very trying. I almost gave up listening. My reverse button got a workout as I was constantly backing up to re-listen for what I missed due to his machine gun delivery.

So many times there wasn't even a pause when the story changed scenes, characters and chapters. Very disconcerting.

I have listened to Brick with other audiobooks so I know he has other delivery styles that are more pleasant. Was it the producer for this book that directed him to compress the run time down ?

David Baldacci Story = A
Scott Brick Narrative = F

Why did audio book editors leave so much dead air?

What made the experience of listening to Split Second the most enjoyable?

Just the opposite. There were no delineating chapter 'calls' on the book. Just 30 seconds of silence. Purely amateur.

Who was your favorite character and why?

King. His humor

Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?

Yes.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Already made for TV. Loved the show. Too bad it was canceled.

Any additional comments?

For the producer and editor... Time to find a new job. Scott Brick... Good read as always. Too bad you were saddled with folks who were 'asleep at the control board.'
