NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

It's good, but not suprising

It was a good story with a good performance, but I wasn't surprised by (what I think) was supposed to be the twist. Or twists. There were only two parts that surprised me a little bit, but if you were paying attention at all, the twists seem predictable really early on in the story.

Enjoyable Listen With Plot Twists

I got Audible because I wanted to listen about business development and self-help books. It got a little monotonous so I took a chance and got this book.
I do enjoy mysteries and thrillers and this was a fun listen. It was interesting from the beginning. I just didn’t know where the story was going.
The main character is very gritty and makes some shocking decisions. Well, shocking to me. I’m like, “Girl, what are you doing?????” I line that about this book.
Take a chance, get the book!

One Of The Best Books Ever Written

WOW! This book may very well be one of my all-time favorites. I am so glad my first experience with it was this audiobook. The narrator was perfect, and I loved how she was able to change her voice to fit so many characters in different, unique ways. The story itself left me unable to stop listening. I was hooked. It felt like watching a movie, even without the visuals. Gillian's descriptions are always so perfect and vivid.

Great but predictable

I enjoyed the story thoroughly, but the foreshadowing was kind of strong so you could easily predict the major point of the ending. Still worth a listen.

Unnecessarily slow, good story though.

The story was good but it was soooooo slow, and there was so much that just dragged on. Maybe I was expecting something like the Silent Patient. Dissatisfied, to be honest.
