NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

Good but predictable

I liked the book. It kept me interested. Sometimes it was overly drawn out but overall- a good audiobook.

I saw the HBO series first

I read a lot of reviews before starting that said the tv series was very similar to the book so I was worried it would not be worth the credit. I’m glad I still decided to purchase the books even though the plot is very similar to the show,

I found that the book was able to lay out the breadcrumbs and unravel the mystery in a much more detailed way that would not have worked on screen. This was particularly obvious with the way the book built up to revealing the mental health issues of the main character by hinting at them for pages. If you know the story then it’s rather obvious why this would not be possible in a tv series. I also found Amma’s character to be a lot more messed up in the book. She was a more sympathetic character in the tv series. I honestly don’t know which one I prefer.

Overall a fascinating listen from start to finish. I do not regret the buy!

Main character was too stinky

My friend and I listened to this as we worked together from home and we guessed most of the ending about 3 hours in… The main character is also described as stinky a concerning amount of times, like dang girl maybe take a shower… it was kind of laughable honestly and not deep and dark and brooding like Flynn I’m sure thought it was. Maybe reading this is a better way of consuming this book rather than listening. Also the reader changed voices for the newspaper guy like 3 times 😂 anyway… it was fine… I’m sure you can find a better use of a credit tho!

pretty good

it was pretty good overall. I think it was kind of a slow story, I actually thought it would have been better than it was. I agree with someone else that the ending felt a little rushed. but overall I still enjoyed the book.

Great book,bad narration.

The narrator annoys me when she does the men’s voices, she sounds like smeagol from Lord of The Rings. Why does she talked in such a strained voice?it’s like she’s horribly constipated.

Slow start but good story

Very slow in the beginning- felt right though being it was in a southern setting. Annoying characters and almost like there was more needed to be said in a shorter time frame. 6/10
