NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

This family is incredible in the weirdest ways...

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I think the narrator did a great job capturing all of the characters. The story sucks you into this world and this small town in Missouri. My only critique is that I had a feeling about who did it from the beginning, and I was sort of right. I was kind of hoping it would have more of a twist ending, but at the same time I loved how it ended. I'm now watching the show and I'm really glad I finished the book beforehand. I'd recommend 100%!

I feel as the last chapter was rushed; otherwise, it was a good and interesting story..

Cool twist.

The twist was good. Kind of saw it coming. Now I'm going to watch the mini series.

Weird

Lot of info thrown at you in the end. Is definitely addicting, but in a weird way.

Excellent book. Great story. Signature piece from Flynn. Ann Marie Lee's performance is tops! Can't wait for her next book. One of my favorite authors.

It Will Scratch Your Gone Girl Itch

What other book might you compare Sharp Objects to and why?

I was Jonesing for another thriller to scratch my Gone Girl itch and this totally did the trick. Set in Missouri, this book had several twists and turns that kept me in my car until I finished the chapter. While the story is not nearly as explosive as Gone Girl, it has stuck with me. In some ways, it goes to a darker or perhaps more familiar place. Flynn nails it with her Hitchcock-esque stories that keep you guessing until the epilogue.

Good story on Prozac

It was good. I wasn't bored or moved by the story. Don't have any favorite parts and I will not miss any of the characters that much. Something's missing and I'm not sure what.
