NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

Camille Preaker

Camille’s voice may have been read with accuracy by the narrator, apologies for forgetting her name, but she didn’t captivate me like Amy Adam’s interpretation. Amy made Camille seem slightly as dangerous as Amma had thought her to be. It was believable Camille could do something vicious, but the audio version of the book made me seen Camille as a dog kicked one too many times and still comes back for more. She sounds weak unlike the angry unpredictable Amy version.

Way Better Than Gone Girl

I read this because Gillian Flynn and WOW! It's so much better than Gone Girl and am not sure why it's not getting the hype. The characters are very complicated while simultaneous being simple enough that you can relate to them. At it's most basics, the book is about a murder of two girls, however it's more complex than that as these murders brings the main character back to her small town in Missouri and back to the unhealthy relationship with her mother. The mother daughter dynamic is unreal and makes the murder story far more complex.

An incredible storyline!

I had my doubts about this book, thinking it would end as most books do, but everything each character did throughout the story just added to the mystery of what happened to the girls & the secrets of the town. I love a good who done it book & of course Gillian Flynn’s books have never disappointed me.

Gets better as you go

At first I didn’t like the melancholy viewpoint of Camille and found the book boring. But as the story progressed, all made sense. In the end I really enjoyed it in a creepy almost guilty way.

Because of the HBO special, I wanted to be able to read the book first. But finding time to read doesn’t come easy for me. So I chose the audiobook. Wow, really draws you into the story. And in the end was shocked! Definitely gonna need to read/hear more from Gillian Flynn
