It was an open-and-shut case when 18-year-old Hannah Docherty was arrested for the brutal murder of her family; she's been incarcerated ever since. When psychotherapist Frieda Klein is asked to assess Hannah, she reluctantly agrees. What she finds horrifies her....
Frieda is haunted by the thought that Hannah might be as much of a victim as her family. Frieda soon begins to realise that she's up against someone who'll go to any lengths to protect themselves....

"Dark, nerve-tingling and addictive." (Daily Express)
"Nicci French's sophisticated, compassionate and gripping crime novels stand head and shoulders above the competition." (Sophie Hannah)

"OK but a little similar to previous volumes"
can't say only ever listen to books very rarely read an actual book
I love Carlson, and Joseph, although they didn't feature quite so much this time, if there is going to be a Sunday, and I hope there will be I think Frieda needs to get a bit of OOOmph
Yes, up there with the best, she has such a lovely reading voice..
No, not at all I like to savour the stories from Nicci French
Yes, not as good as previous instalments a few similarities to the storyline, definitely trailed off towards the end, and a bit of a mediocre ending to be honest
"Yet again an excellent Nicci French crime novel"
Another excellent book in the series. The length of these books makes them ideal for audio performance. Again, the narration was spot on.
Another excellent book in the Frieda Klein series, the sort of book you read slowly as you don't wish it to end.
"Maybe take a little longer with the next one"
Great characterisation, with the usual team, and in many ways a strong storyline, but...
The ending is rushed and totally wrong. I want clues and the ability to second guess, this seems random and mechanical.
"Beth Chalmers/Nicci French power triangle"
My sixth five out of five across the board review for this series after a back to back listening experience. This is from a previous written word addict who had never "done" audio. When Ruth Rendell and PD James left the arena I thought we had nothing to fill the void. Step forward Dr Frieda Klein. Immaculate performances; impeccably expressed characters and fiendish plots. Bravo to the writing duo and Beth Chambers - your talent is incredible!
"Great story enhanced by excellent narration"
This is 6th in series, and the one I enjoyed the most. The narration was excellent.
"Amazing 6th book !!!!!"
Loved this book, I've waited ages for it and it hasn't disappointed.
I do not, however, like this narrator. Her voice grates on my ears. The accents were poor and overall it was not an enjoyable listen.
The book though? Fabulous.
