Publisher's summary

Thirteen bodies are found in a Louisville restaurant. When the police can find no suspect or motive, the family of one of the victims seeks the services of the enigmatic and solitary specialist Roy Prescott, known for his ability to find people who don't want to be found.

Working outside the law and willing to do what the police can't, Prescott hunts the killer, an elusive adversary who is as smart, as methodical, as deadly as he is. The only way to conduct this pursuit is to goad the killer into believing that he must killRoy Prescott. It's a contest fought from one end of the country to the other, and both men understand that, when it's over, only one of them will be left alive.

Critic reviews

"Once Prescott takes the job, the novel shifts into a gear so high that putting the book aside is no longer an option....A bravura performance from one of the few crime writers who never lets you down." (Los Angeles Times)
"Brilliant....A bona fide nail-biter....Thomas Perry's cerebral thrillers unfold methodically, in extremely sharp focus. His attention to detail is so intense that it generates its own brand of quiet suspense." (The New York Times)
"Perry is the best suspense writer in the business....Pursuit is relentless, filled with twists and turns, that rare page-turner that keeps one reading late into the night to finish." (Boston Globe)

I Want More Roy Prescott Stories...”Slick”

I enjoyed this surprise of a tale and a telling! Intelligent and attractive in its story set up and development, as well as, the invitation to understand why both characters do what they do. Perry does that mind game better than I’ve come to expect. Each of his tales opens up the minds of his characters to the reader. He doesn’t dilly around the “soap opera edges” and makes you eventually figure it out. Instead, he slays your inner monologue about these folks, then straps you in for the journey. At the conclusion, you appreciate the invitation, up front/overturned cards and the straightforward, twisting storyteller that he is.

We don’t meet guys on the road, their thumbs out, a greasy bag of fried chicken bones crumpled in a palsied fist...looking for a ride up the road, maybe to town...maybe, to talk to us, to keep our eyes open til the break of dawn. Thomas Perry, and Roy Prescott, seem to be “that man”.

Good read

Interesting story well told. Perry manages to take you on a ride that isn't exactly what you are expecting.

Good author, exciting tale

I've enjoyed Thomas Perry's books, starting with the Butcher's Boy, and continuing through the different series. Perry often introduces a non-typical hero, sometimes unlikeable and occasionally even the "bad guy". Perry's ability to make these characters sympathetic enough for us to want to find out what happens to them is remarkable, particularly as he does it without watering down their personalities. Each one is an individual.

Another thing Perry does very well is craft an exciting story. He does it again here.

Plot and performance lacking

I very nearly deleted this book after the first 30 minutes listening. The near ration has a flat, wooden quality that is hard to take. I decided to tough it out since I had paid for the book. The plot has some dynamic sections but I found it to be somewhat plotting in comparison to other Perry works.

A little more geographic research

I like Thomas Perry’s writing, but this book has several factual errors which could have been avoided with a Rand McNally Road Atlas. It was distracting to the overall performance.

Below Perry cruising speed

No one to root for; working tired material. Perry much better than this. Try another title.

Excellent!

Thoroughly enjoyed this story, Perry pays great attention to detail with his writing. There are many good narrators out there, but Tom Weiner captures the story and characters perfectly, I don’t think anyone else could have done quite as well with this story than he did. I guess I’ll have to find another Perry novel to try out.

Not credible

I liked the Butcher Boy books, but this one not at all. Neither the hero nor the villain were believable characters, and the dialog (internal and external) was mostly cringe-worthy.

Not Good!

I was very dissapointed by this book. The main character was completly unlikeable and unbelievable. The methods by which the hero pursues the villain are so stupid it is laughable. There is also no sort of character development throughout the entire book. Skip this one and go out in pursuit of a real book!

Snore

I tried, I tried, but this book was really boring. It was so dull. The narrator droned on and I often wondered if there had been something wrong with the download. I am so impressed by anyone who is capable of writing a book; the time and energy that goes into that kind of creation. But I am sorry to say this was a real dud.
