Publisher's summary

This riveting and entertaining thriller by Thomas Perry follows a husband-and-wife con team on the run from the Mob, a soldier of fortune between jobs, a two-bit operator with grandiose dreams of tribal dynasty, a sultry CIA operative with divided loyalties, the most dazzling defector ever to hurl a split-fingered fastball, and 20th-century buccaneers who wash up on a tiny island in the Caribbean and turn it into a multinational cash machine. But then the shooting starts.

Somebody is trying to invade the island, and that somebody could be anybody: the CIA, NSC, or IRS; the most powerful, corrupt bank in the US or the South American cocaine mafia - or it could just be the Los Angeles incarnation of the devil himself, a shadowy figure with a checkered past named Fat Jimmy....

Not good Thomas Perry

Nobody writes this fun goofy what's-going-to-happen-next better than Donald Westlake. But Thomas Perry is no Donald Westlake! ISLAND is forced, implausible, and not fun or funny. To be fair, Perry wrote ISLAND more than 30 years ago and it doesn't have the storytelling wit and style which characterize everything else of his I've read. I remain a Thomas Perry fan, but not a fan of ISLAND.

what a caper

this is Thomas Perry's first book and it is a caper! You can tell it is first novel. It has all of the elements of a Perry novel. It is a little raw and it does go on and on -- I was not sure about some of the side stories - such as the Senator. But all and all a fun listen

Not quite up to par

After reading several books by Thomas Perry I was disappointed in this particular one. Flipping back and forth in the story fragmented the flow. Looking forward however to other nyhim. Loved his other books especially The Burglar

Story of a scam

Well written and witty, but dated ( written thirty years ago). Characters are never fully developed but lots of adventures and clever solutions to recurring challenges to the scamsters.

Clown narrator

Clown narrator, annoying, mispronounced lots of common words, does not do any voices, makes a good story mediocre and difficult to listen to.

Horrible narrator

I tried twice to read this book. The narrator just grates on me. Plus he doesn’t do voices. You just get out of breath listening. By the time I tried again and failed, I couldn’t return the book. So the whole experience gets a thumbs DOWN ! And I rarely do reviews.

Couldn’t wait for it to be over

I really like Perry but this book was awful. It was like trying to watch Robin Williams perform for nine hours. Funny in spots but totally ridiculous most of the time.

I could not hear this one through

It started off well enough and parts were amusing. It started to wear me down. Not my kind of island.
