Publisher's summary

An ex-cop takes on a widespread criminal organization targeting midwestern towns in this new thriller from the author of The Old Man

When a sudden crime wave hits several small midwestern towns, the US Attorney for the region calls on Harry Duncan to investigate. An ex-cop known for his unorthodox methods, Duncan is reluctant to go up against a widespread criminal organization—but the attorney in question is Ellen Leicester, the wife who left him fifteen years earlier, and to her, he can't say no.

Initially brought in as a consultant to determine if the racketeering is severe enough to require an all-out investigation by the FBI, Duncan quickly finds himself in conflict with a syndicate far more violent than first suspected. As the investigation develops, he begins compiling a "murder book," the notebook in which a detective keeps records, interviews, photos—everything he needs to build his case. But his scrutiny of the gang soon makes Duncan a target. And Ellen, too.

A thrilling and suspenseful tour of crime-addled midwestern towns, Murder Book is signature Thomas Perry, with characters you won't soon forget, crisply-described action sequences, and breathlessly-tense plotting.

Great story and lots of twists and turns

The great thing about this writer is he gets the story going in One Direction, and then pulls the rug out from under you. I’m going to be listening to more of his stories.

Entertaining

I’ve liked some of Thomas Perry’s other books better and have read most if not all of them more than once as well as having them in Audible.
I listened to this newest book on Audible and finished it in a day. It’s a good story. I felt that some of the sparkle and oomph that I like in past books was not present in Murder Book. It just felt a bit flat.
I think that’s partly due to, in my opinion, an overly witchy ex-wife character. Her nastiness was hard to take and was a drag on the mood of the book.
But having said all that, Thomas Perry is one of my long time favorite authors and I was happy to start my day with his newest, Murder Book.

Always Thomas Perry

Story was good but choppy. Performance was great. You had to pay good attention not to love the thread as the book progressed. I love Thomas Perry.

Not primo Perry

Perry is a terrific crime/thriller writer: the Butcher’s Boy and Jane Whitefield series are superb and most of his stand-alones- Strip, Fidelity, The Old Man, etc - are equally good. Most of the narrators of the audio books are first rate - Michael Kramer in particular. Murder Book is not up to that standard. The writing seems looser and less focused than previous books, the plot is sloppy, and the narration is really not right for Perry. Faux drama and urgency when calm determination or reflection is called for, little attempt at characterization. So although I have given most of Perry’s audio books 5 stars, this one I can’t.
