Dallas's friend, Chief Medical Examiner Morris, had started a serious relationship with Coltraine, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone, including Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.
The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else." But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

Excellent! As usual the author and Narrator, J.D. Robb and Susan Ericksen Bring it to the newest book. It was sad, funny, quirky and as usual Miss Robb (or Roberts) delivers all the characters we have all become so familiar and have fallen in love with. What I particularly liked about "Promises" is how Eve has accepted of who she has become in life and does not harp on her past as a child. I'll admit, I was becoming tired of that. There are some real fun parts you will enjoy ... HINT: Louis & Charles. I do have to recommend to new readers to this series to start from the beginning because if you read this series out of order you will be a little disconnected with the characters and references of past cases. This book in particular. So enjoy, you will not be disappointed ... I "PROMISE".
I love this series, and I particularly liked this installment over the previous one. It's great the way the author keeps you in touch with the assorted cast of characters woven throughout this series. If you are new to the series, I recommend that you go back and start from the beginning with Naked in Death and work your way forward. You won't be disappointed!
Love books, preferably romance and suspense. Typically read/listen to 3-5 a week.
When I saw that J.D. Robb had a new book coming out I could not wait. I saved a credit specifically to get this book. I am ashamed to say, I cannot get enough of the Death Series. I love all the characters and how their lives evolve. I am happy Nora is giving all the characters a chance to be the focus of the book. She still has quite a few left. I doubt I will ever get tired of this series. I wish she would come out with new ones sooner than she does. Please do not let anyone narrate these books except Susan. She does a fantastic job. Before I bought the book I made sure, she was the narrator. She is a much a part of the series as the characters in the books.
I love her consistency with the voices in every single book Susan Ericksen voices out for J.D. Robb series. I have been hooked since selecting the first book, Naked In Death, and have not been able to miss listening to every one in the series since then. This series in general has action, romance, unpredictability, all everything in between you think to expect. My favorite character has always been Moris.
Sad to know he goes through so much in "Promise In Death", but I do like the relationship between him and Dallas. I also Love his quotes!
Thanks JD Robb for creating a world with your imagination and giving me a chance to get lost in it for a while.
Susan Ericksen is the BEST NARRATOR...
I have always enjoyed the In Death series. Truth be told I never read anything by Nora Roberts and was unaware that J. D. Robb was one of her pen names until I was hooked. This book is well written as usual and an excellent listen. That being said I have deeply enjoyed Susan Ericksen's wonderfully flexible narrating style. She has done an excellent job giving the different characters within the story a unique voice; until this book I have appreciated the fact that she has never over done Roark's accent. It seem as though she has been playing around with her interpretation of several different characters in the last few books. My thought is leave perfection alone.
I love how Eve continues to grow (as a person) and within her relationships with other people. Great plot (I don't want to give anything away!)
I love the new slang and have used a few of them myself. And Susan Ericksen is awsome as always she makes the voices flow and you can tell who is speaking when w/o names being said every sentence unlike some readers. I love how she does Roerks ( probably miss spelled) voice. Sad how Morris loses his love before truelly found. If you haven't read or listened to a book in this series before you need to start with the first to get the most out of it. Keep up the good work Nora Robberts/JD Robb
Say something about yourself!
Yes, of course I'd like to listen agan and have listened again-many times. What I like about this 'in death' book is that we learn more about Dr Morris, his past and see him away from the morgue, where he's usually seen.
There are too many characters to choose from, but I always enjoy Peabody, Feeney, Mavis Freestone and Crack.
I enjoyed Dr Morris in this one, mainly because the story is his.
The 'in death' series is one of my favourites, so I recommend the series to all readers and audio listeners.
I'm a librarian, knitter, crochetter... I love audiobooks because I can knit and "read" at the same time.
It is interesting when an author writes better as her pseudonym that with her true name...
The In Death series has some books that are not so good, but what to expect of a series that has what? About 43, 44 books, counting the novellas...
The narrator is great.
I would like to have Roarke in my bed.
And really, I would like to have the courage and compassion Dallas shows in every book.
My dream in reality is to have the gift Nora Roberts or, in this case, J.D. Robb, has to put fantasies, thougths, words in paper. In my opinion, it is the most wonderful gift!
WOW. I didnt think I would be able to pick a favorite. I thought they were all on the same great level for me but this one was awesome. I cried boo hoo tears and I laughed out loud laughter. This one had all the elements and alll of the charcters played their role. Big props to Susan Ericksen she makes the whole stories come to life for me again and again. I felt so bad for Morris and Alex hopefully they will find another love to heal their aching heart.
The ending epilogue was amazing, Butterflies are very significant for me as I lost a loved one a few years ago and she loved butterflies so to say this one was touching is not saying enough. Keep em' coming JD you have me hooked.
"My favourite so far"
This was my favourite book in the series so far. I know that I have said that a couple of times as the series has gone on but this time WOW. A cop is killed Eve and Peabody are sent to investigate. They have to investigate her squad which doesn't go down well but Eve just keeps plodding on ignoring all the BS which comes her way. On the lighter side there is the party at Eve's for the bride to be.
Iam a huge fan of J D Robb books she never lets you down.Ifor one cant get enough of Eve all characters are great in fact they are now part of my family.last word the Narrator is very good.
