Publisher's summary

The propulsive, shockingly plausible sequel to New York Times best seller Daemon.

In one of the most buzzed-about debuts, Daniel Suarez introduced a terrifying vision of a new world order, controlled by the Daemon, an insidious computer program unleashed by a hi-tech wunderkind. Daemon captured the attention of the tech community, became a New York Times and Indie best seller, and left listeners hungry for more. Well, more is here, and it's even more gripping than its predecessor.

In the opening chapters of Freedom, the Daemon is firmly in control, using an expanded network of real-world, dispossessed darknet operatives to tear apart civilization and rebuild it anew. Soon civil war breaks out in the American Midwest, in a brutal wave of violence that becomes known as the Corn Rebellion. Former detective Pete Sebeck, now the Daemon's most powerful - though reluctant - operative, must lead a small band of enlightened humans toward a populist movement designed to protect the new world order. But the private armies of global business are preparing to crush the Daemon once and for all.

In a world of conflicted loyalties, rapidly diminishing human power, and the possibility that anyone can be a spy, what's at stake is nothing less than human freedom's last hope to survive the technology revolution.

Critic reviews

"Freedom™ surpasses its smart, exciting predecessor. This concluding volume crackles with electrifying action scenes and bristles with intriguing ideas about a frightening, near-future world. The two books combined form the cyberthriller against which all others will be measured.” (Publishers Weekly [starred review]

“Suarez continues his popular technothriller, and Daemon fans will be well be pleased with the exciting conclusion.” (Booklist)

"An engrossing, fast-paced tale of speculative fiction." (SF Site)

Absolutely Fantastic

After reading Daemon by Suarez, I was excited to hear about the sequel. I was looking forward to a continuation of the story. What I wasn't expecting was an evolution of the story.
Daemon was mostly about the machinations of the program, it's operatives and the government efforts against it. Freedom(tm) is about so much more.
With the world established, Suarez is able to flesh out the "Dark Net" - his interpretation of Augmented Reality. And he hits it out of the park. He creates a world so plausible and compelling that I am interested in joining this reality, despite it hanging on the brink of social disorder.
As I said, absolutely fantastic.

A clever ending to a great sci-fi tale.

This is a great sequel with the presumably fitting end to a remarkably unique sci-fi thriller. It is fast paced and kept me guessing throughout the novel. I really liked the ending.

The reading was excellent, worthy of the novel.

Worth the wait

I read the original printing of Daemon when it came out and felt like I was left high and dry waiting for the sequel. Then the book got picked up by a major publisher and my wait got extended even further. I gnashed my teeth at the thought.

When I finally saw that FreedomTM came out and was on audiobook, I was hesitant. I decided that I was just being childish at having to wait and clicked the button. Years of rusty memory of the book was suddenly cleaned off by the first few lines of the book and I was definitely happy that I was on a long drive. Not only does this book finish off the best piece of hacker fiction that I have ever read, but it also made me feel good in the end. This book gives hope for mankind in a way that I never expected when I finished the first book of the sequence.
I look forward to more work from Daniel Suarez.

Wow

I loved Daemon so much I had to get Freedom. I have recommended this book to my friends and even people I don't know (chatting in the movie line up). I wouldn't have thought I'd have enjoyed it so much as I am a 55+ female who doesn't play video games.

The story was believable, the the twists and turns kept you guessing who was the villain and who could you trust. Fast pace action and the automation described (don't want to give anything away) was fascinating. Great read with a satisfying ending.

Even at 65 this is excellent

The premise and execution are decidedly aimed at a much younger demographic but this story grabbed my attention and kept me listening through both books with rapt anticipation. Ruthless and rather horrific it still seemed quite necessary in the war that has to come to wrest the world away from the unscrupulous powers that be.
The seed purveyors that plague the honest farmers are typical of the misuse of the power of patents and a certain amount of violence will be required to overthrow their power. It's but a small part of the story but it kept things in perspective. The uniting of young people in a game type environment to change a corrupt world is a marvelous idea well executed even if the devices used are murderous. In the end it takes an evil to overcome institutionalized evil and then that evil is stripped of power by the people. Wonderful.

Not like the first book

more of a story on how humanity is supposed to save itself and become self reliant while fighting internal issues. needed more interaction with the technology.

Better than the first book!

What can I say? Suarez is a visionary. I was disappointed initially in the abrupt ending of the first book...really quite jarring, but Suarez redeemed himself with a magnificent conclusion. This book is so close to the potential reality of the near future...it really makes you think. Enjoy!
