Publisher's summary

New York Times - best-selling writer C. J. Box returns with a thrilling new novel featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett.

She was gone. Joe Pickett had good reason to dislike Dallas Cates, even if he was a rodeo champion, and now he has even more: Joe's 18-year-old ward, April, has run off with him. And then comes even worse news: The body of a girl has been found in a ditch along the highway - alive but just barely, the victim of blunt-force trauma.

It is April, and the doctors aren't sure if she'll recover. Cates denies having anything to do with it - says she ran away from him, too - and there's evidence that points to another man. But Joe knows in his gut who's responsible. What he doesn't know is the kind of danger he's about to encounter.

Cates is bad enough, but Cates' family is like none Joe has ever met before. Joe's going to find out the truth even if it kills him. But this time it just might.

This one is great!

Although a little fantastical, this episode in the lives of all the Picket company is exciting and suspended. By now I've become quite atached to them and root for "justice" (revenge?) in the ways I've come to depend on in C.J Box's wonderful series! I'm so happy he is such a prolific writer. There. is a lot less of the lustrous descriptions of the country, weather and Wolfe in this one. This is made up for in the intense personal experiences of Joe and his family. A Ma Barker type character and her demented sons keep things interesting and uniquely evil! Fun and compelling. My favorite so far!

Damn good book

Another great story with Joe Pickett. Nate is the best support character ever and one hell of a best friend. This whole series is amazing

The Best Joe Pickett Yet!

C.J. Box has got to be one of the best, if not THE best, writers of this genre of fiction. And this may possibly be his best Joe Pickett novel so far. The narration by David Chandler is superb with nuanced voices of the characters that give each a definite and unique aural presence throughout. I listened to this audio book over a few sessions of several hours and never tired of the story or the narrator's performance. A first rate story and performance that you will find so compelling that you will want to hear it again. I'm already on my second experience and my wife (who generally eschews this type of novel) is along for the ride, having been captivated when I began the second journey with Joe Pickett. I hope that Joe and the characters who populate his world never become endangered. Thanks, Mr. Box, for many hours of reading and listening pleasure. You're the best!

Great story and great fun.

I liked the bad guys and they all got what they deserved. I did not guess the ending and I was excited to listen to the next chapter.

This Review Needs A Title...So, I Gave it One

Many plots for the price of one...daughter assaulted, Nate gets out of jail, sage grouse assaulted. Joe Pickett, game warden, handles them all. Characters de rigueur for a Pickett novel, except for Joe's political appointee boss, who's not in the book. I really enjoyed this listen and couldn't put it down. Where's #16?

Good suspenseful read.

Box really has a good grasp of human characters. I have seen people who are like the personality of the"family" in this story. Who might just be capable of blurring the lines betweenprotecting and hurting.

Best one yet

All the Joe Pickett novels are outstanding and this is no exception. A game warden who has a simple, honest and unwavering moral code. Joe Pickett takes on the Cates family when April is beaten. The story is somewhat predictable but thrilling all the same. Nate Romanoski is shot and recovering in the same hospital as April. The various strings of the plot come together neatly in the end. Well narrated and fast paced, this book is another excellent installment in the series.

Great read/listen

Another fast pasted Joe Picket book by C.J. Box! Unlike many serial books, the Joe Picket series just keeps getting better and better.
