Publisher's summary

From the Audible Originals anthology Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge comes this thrilling story of deceit and duplicity by New York Times best seller C.J. Box.

It starts with a stranger walking into a campsite, seemingly out of nowhere. It ends with that same stranger at the Denver airport. Along the way, he has acquired a prize that will be his salvation.

But the road to Easy Street can take unexpected turns. And the only certainty about a sure thing is that nothing is certain at all.

Watch for Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge, coming to Audible on Oct. 6, 2022.

Birds of Prey was created in partnership with International Thriller Writers (ITW).

Wish it was longer!

Great short story, and narrator - would really enjoy more like this but usually feel that way about Mr. Box’s stories

Fast and fun storyline!

The story starts off immediately and doesn't stop until the end. Great story and short but very entertaining!

I’ll read anything from Box, thanks Audible

Was a nice surprise to see for free. I never buy anything under 7 hours, but I’ll take free!

Good performance, meh story

3.45 of 5 stars Precious Cargo by C.J. Box
Narrated by Fred Berman, intro by C.J. Box

Summary:
Starts out with people camping and things going very, very wrong for them. Then, the story cuts to the bad guy who stole something very valuable.

Additional Comments:
• It’s too short to get to know many of the characters. The only one you sort of get to know is the bad guy, and he’s not very likable.
• C.J. Box is a good writer. The Joe Pickett series is a lot of fun, but this short story just doesn’t satisfy on the same level. It’s probably about 5K words long and 42 minutes to read aloud.
• There’s no sense of justice here, just a terrible waste and a tragedy from several angles.
• It was free on audible plus, so I don’t feel like I lost anything by listening. Didn’t gain much either though.
• Narration was good. They always hire competent narrators and edit things well.

Conclusion:
If you need a super short tale, this is okay.

Short story

Even in his short stories, CJ Box captures my attention. I especially liked that Mr. Box gave an introduction to this story.
I would like to get in touch with this author and connect him with a guide who visits the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. I think it would be a great idea for a Cassie Dewell novel.

Is that it?

Would have loved a novella or novel. Too short. Even for a short story. Ha

CJ Box never disappoints.

Narrator was great. Good short story. Gave a 4 for story as it kinda just stopped (as this review does). I guess a "short" can only go so far.
