Publisher's summary

A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past. But Pendergast learns there is more at work than a ghastly episode of family history: he is soon stalked by a subtle killer bent on vengeance over an ancient transgression. In short order, Pendergast is caught in a wickedly clever plot, which will leave him stricken in mind and body...and may well end with his death.

Fun, but very unbelievable.

Although this book was thrilling, full of mystery and excitement, it was just incredibly unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, but it was just so far-fetched. The whole time I was reading it I kept running into areas where I just thought to myself, there is no way that would have ever happened. Anyway, as you already know by this point, the Pendergast books can get pretty out there, but this one "Takes the Cake" so far (in my opinion). Nothing necessarily Supernatural, like in previous books, but just so ridiculous. As always, if you enjoy the Pendergast books, you will no doubt enjoy this one. Just be prepared and keep an open mind. Rene Auberjonois did an outstanding job narrating!

Solid Pendergast plotting again

This was a good addition to the Pendergast series, after the somewhat bizarre and unsatisfying (to me) multi-book plot arc about the dead/murdered/oops not dead wife Helen - I lost patience and gave up on that set, which means some of the details in this book which were introduced then surprised me quite a bit! May go back. But this book has far more of the style and older supporting characters that I enjoy in older Pendergast novels including Relic and Reliquary and especially Cabinet of Curiosities, one of my favorites. I especially enjoyed the greater involvement and development of Constance Green, introduced in Cabinet of Curiosities, now Pendergast's ward.

As always, Rene Auberjonois completely owns Pendergast and the many regional accents invoked in his travels. Strong narrator and familiar from the series.

I love series books, I love the development of characters over time and within situations, these books never disappoint. Love them..

A disaster on the medical front

Lincoln and Child desperately need a medical consultant. Without spoilers, not only is the whole premise medically impossible (I'll accept that since they use supernatural themes often), but the actual medical parts are just wrong. Their doctors say dumb things. Their events are medically impossible. It's happened in other Pendergast books but this one was the worst for it so far.

Solid, as expected

Rene Auberjonois does a great job with this series. I always enjoy his performance. Although his voice is rough and masculine, he still does a pretty good job with the feminine characters. This particular Pendergast story was, for me, one that I liked less than the others but still better than most other things I’ve read/listened to lately. I haven’t listened to the series in order so the story of Alban was unknown to me. I probably would have enjoyed this one more had I read the previous one first. Ohh well. I recommend this to everyone who likes Pendergast but you should read them in order.

Blue Labyrinth

I have read Pendergast novels for years and each is better than the last. This was no exception! Most fascinating character ever

Top form.

This one is the caliber of Relic, Still Life, and Brimstone. Rene Auberjonois has really become the voice of Pendergast and it really shows in this one. Each character has a unique and instability recognizable voice.
Now the story...wow...just wow. I don’t want to give anything anyway, but this is a deep dark look into the Pendergast family tree that we’ve never seen. Also, Vinnie, Margo, and I believe a few more “old” characters have good parts in this one. Don’t pass it up. It’s a hell of ride.
