Publisher's summary

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Nora Roberts takes listeners deep into the rugged Black Hills of South Dakota, where the shadows keep secrets, hunters stalk the land, and a childhood friendship matures into an adult passion.

Cooper Sullivan spent the summers of his youth on his grandparents’ South Dakota ranch, sharing innocent games and stolen kisses with the neighbor girl, Lil Chance. Now, twelve years after they last walked together hand in hand, fate has brought them back to the Black Hills.

Coop has left his fast-paced life as an investigator in New York to take care of his aging grandparents and the ranch he has come to call home. Though the memory of his touch still haunts her, Lil has let nothing stop her dream of opening the Chance Wildlife Refuge, but something...or someone...has been keeping a close watch. When small pranks and acts of destruction escalate into a heartless attack on Lil’s beloved cougar, memories of an unsolved murder in these very hills have Coop springing to action to keep Lil safe.

Lil and Coop know the natural dangers that lurk in the wild landscape of the Black Hills. But a killer of twisted and unnatural instincts has singled them out as prey...

Intense

This is an intense story. There is a little gratuitous violence, and the conflict between the love interest was a little unbelievable, but this is fiction. It was a "page-turner" to be sure. It is reminiscent of Northern lights in its feel. So I have to say that it was well worth the listen for me, despite some of the unnecessary trappings.
And unlike some, I liked the narrator--not the best rhythm, but I do like the quality of his voice. I think that the smooth quality of his voice was necessary to balance out the intensity of the storyline. I liked enough to listen to it again at some point.

Too much Background/GREAT Story

I am quickly becoming a fan of Nora Roberts. Black Hills seemed to start a little slow, and there was too much background, which can be great except it just went on and on. But the story was great enough that it didn't matter. I was more than willing to listen and go forth because I was so in to the characters.

New York meets the country life in a big way as a child, but as years pass he can't shake the country or the people instilled from that life. They are now the biggest part of him as he has grown into a man and moves back when his g-dad has a heart attack to help out. So begins the real life, rekindled love/hate/hurt relationship, and adventure with a serial killer in-tow.

The narrator could have picked up the pace a bit, but he wasn't bad. At times when there is some excitement, let's hear the excitement...know what I mean? Other than that fantastic book.

loved it!!

If you could sum up Black Hills in three words, what would they be?

exciting, mysterious, thrilling

What was one of the most memorable moments of Black Hills?

every part with the cougars.....

Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

best one yet.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

she trusts the cougar, but can she trust him?....

Excellent

Was one I really enjoyed. Will one day read again. One of the few I couldn’t stop listening to until it was over and then wanted more.

Good listen

Narrator could have done better at distinguishing between the male voices. Ive listened to much worse.
Over all it was a good listen and story.

Great Nora Roberts

Although we have the normal NR storyline of heroine, somehow unavailable man and psychotic looming in the distance, it's still a compelling read. It's clear that NR did her research about wildlife refuges. Agree with other reviewers that the narrator wasn't the best; at times I had difficulty figuring out who was talking and I was embarassed FOR him during the sex scenes- I kept giggling as I wondered how m any takes it took for him to get through it. Def. distracted me from my reading! Ending was good if predictable- while up to this point it seemed believable in terms of the animal behavior, the climax made me skeptical. Overall a good story, but if this narrator does more of her books again I'll read them instead.
