London police detective Maeve Kerrigan has spent plenty of time at Murchison House. One of the many cement high-rise towers comprising the Maudling Estate housing project, Murchison House is home to a motley mix of society. From domestic abuse victims and elderly widows with nowhere else to turn to its flourishing criminal elements, Maeve is familiar with many of its occupants by name or reputation. But when a fire breaks out at Murchison House that consumes the top floors and leaves three dead, Maeve and her colleagues are startled to learn the identity of one of the victims. Geoff Armstrong was a wealthy, notoriously right-wing London politician - the last person they'd expect to find in a place like the Maudling Estate. And things get even murkier when evidence surfaces indicating Armstrong was murdered before the fire broke out. Was his death connected to the fire? To the other deaths at Murchison House? And what was he doing there in the first place? What Maeve begins to uncover will lead her on a terrifying journey through all levels of society, putting her very life in danger.
Jane Casey's next riveting mystery featuring beloved detective Maeve Kerrigan will keep listeners resisting the pause button from the opening scene to the stunning conclusion.

I binge listened to this title and really enjoyed it; I could have done with slightly less pining over her ex-boyfriend, but Maeve seemed to professionally come into her own, showing confidence that was lacking in prior titles and the fire plot had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. The narrator does a good job tackling many voices and accents and was an enhancement to the story. I'm already waiting for the next in the series!
Half the pleasure in this audio book is the talent of the performance. The rest is in the characterizations and the complexity of the story. I can hardly wait to experience the rest of the series. Highly recommended. A strong female protagonist with sharp edges, deep shadows and a mature sense of self.
The characters are beautifully written and portrayed. Love Maeve's view of the world and her human responses. Can't wait for the next in series.
Mysteries are my favorite, but I love most any well written books.
I listened to the whole series in a little over a week! I love the characters and am really sad I have to wait for the next book.
This was my favorite from the series. There were several stories within the main one. Very well written!
Love the way the author has developed the story line of the main characters . Can't wait for the next book in the series .
I love this series. I have a special interest in female detective series and I have read and listened to many. This series is my favorite. I also love the narrator she is excellent.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and I hope more will follow. Jane Casey did a wonderful job of creating all of the characters. I find this series to be very enjoyable. Sarah Coomes did a great job of bringing all the characters to life, giving each their own voice. I highly recommend this series.
I've already listened to this book twice. The story is so good and you can tell Jane Casey has done her research. I love Derwent. He is such a rogue! I just don't know why Maeve still thinks so badly of him when everything he does shows how much he cares about people and her. I think Josh is in love with Maeve, but she is in love with Rob. I love Rob too, but Josh is such a bad boy that I love him a little bit more. I laughed out loud during the "sex" scene. It was hilarious.
I don't really understand why Maeve blames everything on herself. She simply never puts the blame where it belongs. BUT --- I just cannot wait for the next book in the series. Bring on more Maeve and Derwent.
Casey has good plotlines, bit I found the narrator to be far too lugubrious and the story itself dragged. Perhaps no one else cares that Kerrigan's relationships are sophomoric, or that she is yoo weak and shallow, but I do. So I bid Maeve Kerrigan farewell, with relief.
