Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

A stunning debut thriller in the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and John Grisham!

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Alex agrees to take on Ohlig's defense.

Through the course of two trials, secrets are revealed that force Alex to question whether any of the people in his life are who they appear to be. Most importantly, he must decide whether the identity he projects to the world is the man he truly is or even wants to be.

With its powerful voice, pause-resistant tension, and strong cast of characters, A Conflict of Interest will captivate listeners right up to its electrifying conclusion.

Critic reviews

"This outstanding first novel follows Defense Attorney Alex Miller and his young family through the grinding world of high-priced criminal defense in New York City, detailing what can happen to an otherwise nice guy. David LeDoux's minimalist narration style works well. He imbues all the characters with a distinctive sound and unique persona." (AudioFile)
"More twists than a California cloverleaf interchange." (Bookreporter)
"This gifted writer should have a long and successful career ahead of him." (Publishers Weekly)

Good performance, predictable story line.Enjoyable

Never knew whether to like or hate the main character. He is a lawyer after all. Many technical errors. For example, says that the French term "voir dire" is Latin. Several other goofy errors like that throughout the book. I didn't know whether it was the character screwing up or the author since it was narrated in the first person. Overall I enjoyed the book but would not listen to it again or see the movie if any.

Surprising!

Any additional comments?

I got this book while trawling around looking for a new author to follow. I am not disappointed! The story started out in a bland enough manner, but suddenly threw in a rather nice twist that grabbed my attention. Thereafter, a succession of twists followed, continuing right to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed 'A Conflict of interest' and will definitely be looking out for more of Mitzner's work.

Couldn't stop listening!

this book was really good. I would sit in the garage not wanting to turn it off in my car. Although some of the plot points were hard to believe the action was quick and completely captivating. Great narration too. Can't wait to read more of this author.

GREAT STORY but narration was distracting

Would you try another book from Adam Mitzner and/or David LeDoux?

I would definitely read another book from Adam Mitzner. Sometimes a person can get a feel for the path a book is going down and a couple times I thought I did only to find out I was way off. I like this .. I definitely did not see the ending coming. I found this book very entertaining and would definitely seek others by this author.

Would you be willing to try another one of David LeDoux’s performances?

I don't think so ... Sorry David but there was WAY too much EMPAsis in this BOOK that IT was diffiCULT to mainTAIN focus on the STORYline. I don't know if this is David's style of reading but I found it very distracting. Some emphasis is great and adds to a story but in this book it was waaaay too often. Depiction of the main character was good. However some of the others were a little off.

Great story, great narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I bought this as it was recommended by Audible, I suppose because I like Michael Connelly stories. Really interesting story with a lawyer angle, it kept me wanting to keep listening and stay in the car, and listen very time I was in the car. It doesn't get better than that for me.

2 Day Obsession

I'm not exactly sure what it was about this book, but I couldn't stop listening. I listened on my way to work, made excuses to go somewhere at lunch so I could listen more, listened on my way home, and then listened to my book all evening until I couldn't stay awake any longer. By day 2 I was able to finish the book.
I was completely intrigued by the main character and the choices he made, and the consequences suffered because of those choices. But in addition to the main character, there were choices made by supporting characters that were just as intriguing. Sometimes you knew about the choices as they were happening, other times they were revealed later. It was a great mix of both legal and personal drama. It didn't go exactly as I thought it would and I think that added to the appeal.
David LeDoux did a really good job with the narration. There were a few times where the sound went a bit soft/loud/soft, but I consider this more of a production issue and can't fault the narrator.

Interesting plot, sub-par narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not, there are many better reads to recommend.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Kept me interested, but comfortably in the middle of my chair.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This is the first narration that I have listened to, over 5 or 6 years, that did not fit the book or enhance the experience. He was not bad, just didn't fit the voices and intonation to the characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No
