A stunning debut thriller in the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and John Grisham!

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Alex agrees to take on Ohlig's defense.

Through the course of two trials, secrets are revealed that force Alex to question whether any of the people in his life are who they appear to be. Most importantly, he must decide whether the identity he projects to the world is the man he truly is or even wants to be.

With its powerful voice, pause-resistant tension, and strong cast of characters, A Conflict of Interest will captivate listeners right up to its electrifying conclusion.

Critic reviews

"This outstanding first novel follows Defense Attorney Alex Miller and his young family through the grinding world of high-priced criminal defense in New York City, detailing what can happen to an otherwise nice guy. David LeDoux's minimalist narration style works well. He imbues all the characters with a distinctive sound and unique persona." (AudioFile)
"More twists than a California cloverleaf interchange." (Bookreporter)
"This gifted writer should have a long and successful career ahead of him." (Publishers Weekly)

Distracting narration, plodding plot

This audiobook wasn't an easy listen. The narrator's nasal intonation with inconsistent word accentuation was distracting. The plot was slow, but the few twists were somewhat redeeming. The characters were not believably fleshed out. I frequently listen to audiobooks several times, but this one will be deleted.

Unbelievable

Without giving anything away the lawyer’s revenge actions at the end of the book is simply unbelievable. Not enough twists and surprised.

Steady

Maintained & held me with an excellent end. A smart story with a talented narrator who sounded like he was born for the job.

Back to the drawing board on this one Mr. Mitzner.

First the positive. It is an interesting story well written and performed. Enough plot twists and a few surprises to make it interesting for me to finish. The characters were well formed with enough good and not so good to make them believable. The little girl is darling. Everyone involved are nice looking and know their way around the courtroom and such.

The negative. I was expecting a legal thriller but ended up with LA Law series of episodes. A young and sucessful lawyer sets about to destroy his life with the help of a beautiful assistant. He finds out that he has come by his horrible choices honestly due to his mother. Her ugly and ongoing situation was not manifested for 30 + years. Sorry I do not think so. I cannot believe her husband and son were that totally out of touch they would have not figured something was amiss. He is also surprised when what he has been doing catches up with him with the attending consequences. I cannot stand guys like this. The world by the tail on a downhill pull and they let go for a little strange stuff. Grisham has nothing to worry about from this author in the legal thriller genre.

I did not like the narrator

The story was a good fast paced one with lots of twists and turns but I could not stand the narrator. There was no distinction between characters and no inflection in his voice at all. A very flat reading of the book. I don't have any criticism for the story. It is a good tale.

Kept us interested

It's the first Adam Mitzner book we've listened to. When listening, we were enthralled. When not listening, we were discussing it. Good characters and story and well performed. Our next audio book will definitely be another Mitzner!

Excellent listen although a little too long

There were twists and turns that went outside the norm through to the end. Heroes and heroines were slow to emerge and only after some thought.

Twists and turns

Would you listen to A Conflict of Interest again? Why?

Yes, it kept my attention and I was eager to hear the outcome and was surprised by the ending, which doesn't happen to me often

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Mostly

Have you listened to any of David LeDoux’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't think that I have, but I thought this was an excellent performance and would listen to him again.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Surprise, I was surprised by the end of the book

Any additional comments?

I'd be interested in other books by Adam Mitzner and others read by LeDoux
