Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

Excellent book. Excellent read.

Thiis was my second Adam Mitzner book. I read A Matter of Will last week and enjoyed that book so much I went straight for another of his works. I was not disappointed. It was a real ‘page turner’. Right to the final moments it was a gripping read. Never expected the ending as laid out.

The narration by Kevin T Collins was outstanding. The best narration from any book I’ve listened to from almost 50 books. He really made the characters come alive, both male and female. He didn’t just read he performed it. The feeling he portrayed at different times in the book were excellent.

I don’t know if Dan Sorenson, the lawyer in this piece, makes a return from Martinique but I hope so. I have no doubt whatsoever that my next book will be another Mitzner work. Probably, A Conflict of Interest or Losing Faith. Let’s hope for more of the same.

Odd....

Started out pretty good, then seemed like a lesson in courtroom procedure, then went a completely different direction at the end. Not bad, not great, but definitely odd.

This narrator misunderstands narration

He feels obliged to"act" each part, to translate the action as he interprets it. As a result he detracts from the story with his histaronics. One longs for the understatement of a Will Patton, or Simon Vance or other more careful readers.

Good until the end

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The ending. There was so much that didn't make any sense. I think the author was either at a loss on how to end this book or was pressed for time and had to end it because the ending sucked.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot did keep my attention. It was an interesting story until the end.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

He was good. I just liked him.

Was A Case of Redemption worth the listening time?

Yes, until the end...then I was mad.

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure if I can recommend this book. I was really upset how it ended. It was like a different person wrote the last few hours.

Great book but some reservations

The narrator was excellent!
Story was great with a really unexpected twist right at the end
The language was sometimes coarse at inappropriate places
Blasphemy was very off putting

I gave up

Seems to rely on "relationship action" rather than actual plot development. I started skipping ahead and never gained interest.

OK story, poor naration

Once the story got past all the rap slang, it was pretty good. The love angle bothered me but Mitzner made up for that near the end. There were holes in the legal parts of the story for which he tried to give quick fixes during the trial, but he also attempted to teach the reader how the legal system worked throughout the book - as if readers of such novels didn't have a clue.

At first Collins, the narrator, seemed pretty good. His best moments come in his voices for different characters. However, I soon noticed that every sentence was spoken with the same emotional intensity whether it had to do with missing his family, arguing a legal defense, or going for a jog. The hardest thing for me, which really grated on my nerves throughout the entire reading, was Collins' method of pronouncing the possessive of any noun that ends in the letter S. I'm sure both ways must be correct today as grammar and spelling rules have come to forgive just about anything anymore but I believe that "Colin's method" is pronounced as it is spelled, NOT as "Collinses method." "Brooks' attitude" should not be read to sound like "Brookses attitude."

I don't regret reading it but it's far from being on my favorites list.

okay story, okay narration, okay overall

I really like his other novel, A Conflict of Interest. That book was really good. This one was just okay. I guess one can't write a really good book all the time. The end of the book saves it from being a 3 star novel. I think the narrator is just a little over dramatic in the reading, but that might just be me.
