Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

PRETTY GOOD MYSTERY THRILLER

At first I had difficulty getting into this story. Mainly because it's about a rap artist charged with murder and the fact that I've worked in rap for 25 years as a consultant and songwriter. For me, it seemed like it was panning out to be the same misunderstood white person's idea of the rap genre and the people involved. In some ways I was right. But, for the less jaded, overall this was a good story with plenty of unexpected plot twists. The narration is perfect for this book - usually a major complaint for me.

I Really Appreciated the Surprise Ending

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, if I knew they like murder mysteries & court cases

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not especially, but it kept my interest none the less & that is saying quite a bit for me. I learned a lot about being a defense lawyer & the court process which I give kudos to the author for. Book should be educational if possible. The story plot was real life which I liked. And there certainly was a villain aspect to the stroy as well. But the ending made the whole book! Sorry can't say anymore bout that.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

Very much! If I didn't know any better I would have thought he wrote the book becasue he put such a personal touch to the narration.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I might watch it on Netflix

A Good Listen!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, it had believable twits and turns. The judge in this court room drama was horribly unfair, but the main character kept plowing forward. Each chapter had an interesting twist.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?

Daniel Sorenson - the main character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending - I didn't see it coming. Whaaaaat?!!

Good Trial Lawyer Tale.

Mitzner's characters, from the DA to the Judge,to the Defense Lawyer, ( the main charactet) ring true. As a trial lawyer myself, I very rarely read, or enjoy lawyer books. I have a tendency to pick too many holes in the plot or the trial objections etc. Not to say I didn't do it in this book but overall it was pretty ture to form. In fact, at times, when the author was talking about emotions and the pressures of a trial lawyer he was right on. The characters were very realistic. The Judge is someone I've been in front of many times, some actually worse. The story moves along well, a little sappy at times, but I stayed interested. Overall A good read, especially if you like lawyer books.

Good Story and Great Narrator

Story is good, solid. Good courtroom scenes. Keeps your interest. Moves along at a brisk pace. Waiting for the next shoe to drop - good suspense. A judge who doesn't care for the defense and is somewhat of a showboat keeps it interesting. A rapper-star-hopeful and a dead superstar singer. All with some romance thrown in - not too much. Interesting book. I like it and recommend it. Am going to listen to his other book on Audible to see if it's as good.

Legal thrillers can be boring..but NOT this one !!

A great book well written and even better read (excellent performance by Kevin Collins). It has all elements that keep you hooked to it : mystery, romance, humor and search for redemption. The only drawback is that you've got very few characters , so it gets relatively easy to identify the villain. also the end is a bit disappointing. Look forward reading more from Adam Mitzer !

A typical court room drama.

This is a fairly typical court room drama. But better. The characters, the protagonist's dilemma make for an original drama. Look forward to the next Mitzner novel.

lusty lawyers take on Goliath

A rap song and a rumor are the "evidence" that Legally Dead killed a Taylor-Swift popstar. But the prosecution seems to have it all wrapped up. Even the judge is against the defendant and the lawyers. It's tense courtroom stuff all the way to the end, so if you suffer from anxiety, stay clear.

In between the my-wife-and-daughter-were-killed and the I-only-date-losers backstories of the two lawyers, they hook up for some great sex. So get your Danielle Steele on and camouflage it in a Micky Haller. The story is actually pretty good with some surprising turns. If there's redemption going on, it is only in that Dan quits being a drunk and moves past the loss of his family. The rest is pretty sad even if justice is done. Maybe that's always the case.

Wow! Super legal thriller...

Simply put, this will remind you of Grisham. There are more twists and turns than a mountain road. Be prepared to stick with it until it's speedy conclusion.
