Publisher's summary

Listed number one in women's fantasy fiction in Kindle.

One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert.

I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me.

When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it. I need the money more than I care about my sanity.

It’s dangerous. I have to embrace the magic and dark of my past. And I need Advil to keep me going.

But those who’d hold me back better sit up and take notice because a new woman is in town, and she’s not about to be counted out by anyone. Even if she does groan when she rolls out of bed in the morning.

A paranormal women's fiction with a bit of class and a lot of sass for anyone who feels like age is just a number!

Sensational

Who says you can't kick ass after you turn 40? Certainly not Bree O'Rylee! She may be a little out of shape and popping some Advil, but she's kicking ass and taking names! Shannon Mayer seamlessly combines real-life struggles and the paranormal to create a fabulous beginning to her new series.

And as always, fantastic performance by Lauren Fortgang.

The next books aren't on Audible!

Great story which left me wanting more but for some reason the next two books aren't on Audible! I hate that! I wouldn't have started a new series if I'd known because it's just going to drive me crazy. I don't have time to sit down & read hence my using Audible in the first place. As Bree would say, "ducking ducks!"

Really enjoyed

Will admit that as someone (way) over 40 this made me feel really ancient, but otherwise I cannot fault the book. Liked the main character, liked the other characters as well. Did not see the ending coming At All.

Minor notes: 1) If you’re going to have a main character who is basically horny all the time, it seems slightly silly to use the euphemism “ducks” for the f-word. People who would be offended by the f-word aren’t going to be happy about a 40yo who has the hots for more than one guy. I’m guessing at least, ‘cause that is not me. 2) If you’re buying a set of kinda magical clothing that the maker says will change as needed, I want to see them change! It’s kind of like having a gun on a stage set: it must be used during the course of the play or you’re cheating.

Am just hoping Audible picks up the next book soon, as I will happily spend a credit to read more about these characters.

Oh wow!

I rarely fall in love so fast with a main character but I was there from the first chapter. I ordered the book because the heroine is 41 and hoped for the best. The book delivered and then some. What a tenacious woman, and she uses snark to get through all her awkward situations. Robert the Skeleton is a great, unique character. Everything was just right. I will follow this series for sure! The narrator is very good too.

Favorite Mayer Book Yet!

Holy moly – I think this was the best of Mayer’s books yet! I loved the main character, Bree. She is a take-charge woman, full of snark, yet is still vulnerable in this stage of her life. I applaud Mayer for facing the uncertainty and doubts due to Bree’s situation. It made it feel that much more relatable. Grave Magic Bounty is full of quirky, temperamental characters which captivated me. The fact that Bree finally unlocks her ability to see the shadow world after returning to Savannah, and struggles to remember her training with her Gram makes everything seem new for her and the reader at the same time.

My number 1 critique was her use of the reference of Bree’s ex-husband. It really really grated on my nerves that she always used the word “Himself”. Regardless of the sentence structure or grammar. I wish instead she would have used any version of “He” or maybe alternating insults throughout the entire book. Also, the conclusion was quite complex, while fast-paced. It was a bit difficult to follow, and I ended up re-reading it more than once.

Mayer did do a good job of hooking you into the story of Bree trying to save her Gram’s house from being sold. It isn’t resolved in this book, which hooks you for books to come. I honestly can’t wait for the next book to come out!

It was good

The story was okay. It had moments in the story that kept my interest. The story included all the typical things you'd expect from this genre, a Gran who had powers, a secret society, an underground facility, ghosts, etc. The writer kept mentioning throughout the book how old the main character was at 41 which was off putting and a little annoying. Overall, an okay book.

Superb!

I absolutely loved the book so I downloaded the audible for a road trip. I was not disappointed! Lauren Fortgang truly brought Breena O’Rylee to life. She nailed her sassy attitude and quick wit. Fortgang made the book come to life. Much the way I heard it in my own head. Not many narrators can pull that off for me. I look forward to the next book and Fortgang just made it to the top of my narrator list.

Outstanding adventure

I’ve found a new favorite author and narrator with this series. This was actually a first for both for me and I can’t recommend either enough. I love the fantastical realities of the 40+ woman finding live in the supernatural world. Fortgang is a phenomenal narrator in this genre and an instant auto click for me. Mayer is fantastic in her writing mid life, basic but ballsy women in new pnr lifestyles. LOVE LOVE and cannot recommend enough.

Ducking right!

Can you say amazing? She is midlife, bigger than life and doesn’t give a flying duck! You can still be interesting and badass over 40 and she proves it. Great story and wonderful narration!
