For all the thousands of books that have been written about religion, few until this one have attempted to examine it scientifically: to ask why - and how - it has shaped so many lives so strongly. Is religion a product of blind evolutionary instinct or rational choice? Is it truly the best way to live a moral life? Ranging through biology, history, and psychology, Daniel C. Dennett charts religion’s evolution from “wild” folk belief to “domesticated” dogma.

Robert Oppenheimer was among the most brilliant and divisive of men. As head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, he oversaw the successful effort to beat the Nazis in the race to develop the first atomic bomb – a breakthrough that was to have eternal ramifications for mankind and that made Oppenheimer the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.” But with his actions leading up to that great achievement, he also set himself on a dangerous collision course with Senator Joseph McCarthy and his witch-hunters. In Robert Oppenheimer: A Life Inside the Center, Ray Monk, author of peerless biographies of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, goes deeper than any previous biographer in the quest to solve the enigma of Oppenheimer’s motivations and his complex personality.

When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Phenomenal
I had a fellow physics lover suggest this book and I'm glad he did! Such a cool biography. As the title states, Oppenheimer is the father of the atomic bomb but this book offers a nuanced portrayal of a man whose brilliance shaped history. Beyond the scientific achievements, the book dives into the complex ethical considerations that shadowed Oppenheimer's career, adding a layer of depth to the narrative. For those fascinated by the intersection of science, ethics, and history, this biography serves as a comprehensive and thought-provoking account of one of the 20th century's most influential figures.

Fascinating and engaging!
This book is a fascinating read about the “Father of the Atomic Bomb”, J Robert Oppenheimer. J
R MacGregor’s book reveals not only the story behind the development of the atomic bomb and
Oppenheimer’s role in that effort, but the interesting, complex and profound life of the man
himself. We learn how Oppenheimer fit into the evolution of science with legendary fellow
scientists of the time - shaping a new look at the universe that deviated from the understanding
that classical, Newtonian laws of physics had defined and that had worked so well, without
debate, for centuries. Being an engineer myself, by training and career, the parts of the book
that drew me in, were not just the discussions about the evolution of science and physics, but
the genius, heart and sole of the man who was J Robert Oppenheimer. It was so interesting to
find out about the complex mind that helped reshaped our scientific vision of the magical
universe all around us through quantum physics and theoretical science. But, it was equally
intriguing to learn of the heart and soul of this brilliant scientist and how he struggled with ethical
issues associated with scientific discovery as it unleashed awareness of the immense and
potentially deadly power of atomic energy. Highly recommended!

Know More About Oppenheimer
Amazing book! Jump into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brainiac behind the atomic bomb. This book goes through his childhood in New York to his big role in World War II's Manhattan Project. The book also digs into Oppenheimer's after-war years and his smarty-pants contributions to nuclear physics.
I also like it where the book talks about Oppenheimer wrestling with big questions about right and wrong after making the bomb. The book isn't boring as it brings in stories from people who knew him and how he's shown in movies and stuff.
If you want to peek into the brain of a genius torn between knowledge and doing the right thing, then this is the book for you. Highly recommended!
