Publisher's summary

Long before Earth began conquering her neighboring stars, Legion Varus was deployed on Tau Ceti. Valuable and highly illegal treasures were stolen during the campaign, but McGill never gave it a second thought.

The Tau haven’t forgotten him, however. For decades, they’ve hunted and plotted, and at last they’ve found the pirate who robbed them. Tau agents invade Earth seeking revenge and profit. Caught up in violence and intrigue, McGill is given the task of finding out where the loot has gone and who was responsible for the theft in the first place. The hunt takes Legion Varus to Ice World, a distant planet with an inhospitable climate.

Decent entry in the series.

Not Larson's best entry in the series, but slightly above what you might expect from him. Galina's character becomes more developed and there's less focus on the Legion and more on the MC this time around. it does break with traditional structure of this series a little bit, but ends the way one might expect. very good, but he's done better.

another great book for the great series

it's kind of like taking a break from your family and then getting back together with your family and hearing all their stories again. I don't ever seem to get tired of hearing about James McGill even laughed out loud a couple of times. I hope this is not the end and there's more to come.

just keeps getting better!

you might imagine that after 15 books the author would just run out of interesting stories and scenarios but no, not in this series. James Mcgill is probably one of the most interesting and enjoyable characters I've ever encountered. hopefully he keeps writing these books because they never seem to get old or overdone.

The narration

It's a funny witty and surprisingly introspective series of books. Full of off the wall adventures and wild times.
It's not literature, so if you're looking for profound prose you'll need to keep looking. This is a crazy little ride in a small section of a big galaxy. It's irreverent in all the rights ways, with a little room to grow to keep with the times.
If I'm being honest, I'd love to see this as a series on some streaming channel with quality production values. Love the series and after this 2nd listen of all 16 books, I'm finally getting on to City World!

Long time listener, very rarely a reviewer

My brother gifted me a subscription to audible years ago when I suddenly had to commute a fair distance to work. I've been an addict ever since. I have listened to a lot of books. This series is my absolute favorite. I very much look forward to every entry, and am excited every time a new one is announced. I love these characters. In my world, Mr. Larson, you are a treasure.

"McGill cheats, and he wins."

Carlos pretty much sums up James McGills modus operandi with this line earlier in the series and it remains true throughout Undying Mercs. Murderous space Huck Finn saves earth. Again. It's glorious.
