Publisher's summary

From Hugo and Dragon Award finalist David VanDyke, and science fiction legend and Dragon finalist B.V. Larson, comes book four in the epic military space opera adventure saga!

The Republic, the Opters, and a strange Crystalline race of unknown origin all meet in a series of titanic battles. Commodore Straker summons thousands of ships, but he soon learns he’s technologically outclassed by the enemy.

With traditional victory impossible, the race is on for each side to destroy the key worlds of the other. Billions die, entire planets are destroyed.

Even while the war rages, dark suspicions grow. There are traitors in the midst of the chaos. Straker realizes the worst enemy is the one you believed to be your ally....

Hive War is a thrilling tale of warfare and adventure among the stars. This is the fourth book in the Galactic Liberation series. Look for book 1, Starship Liberator if you’re new to this expanding universe.

Great end to a great series.

I really loved this series. I made the mistake of reading it at the same time as another BV series and it got a little confusing what was going on in which book. But they are all out now and you can binge the whole thing.

A Masterpiece!

Larson and VanDyke outdid themselves on this one! The only thing I had trouble swallowing was the nature of the crystalline entities. But the A.I., Victory, was an immensely satisfying villain! You would think that “beings” such as Capt. Victory and the monster from another story called the Terminator would cause our scientists and military leaders to put a halt to all development of artificial intelligence, but there will always be some idiot(s) who will rationalize its value to humanity. Which could turn out to be our downfall.

But kudos to the authors and to Mark Boyett for a magnificent and unforgettable military sci-fi epic tale!

A perfect ending?

Some stories don't know when to quit. The business model seems to be: (write a book, find it's successful and then milk that bitch for as long as one can); and they do. This is a double edged sword as it obviously finds an audience but then it abuses it until almost the point of utter exhaustion. This series did not. It delivered four powerful novels that actually delivered what could be interpreted as a conclusive end. It was a wonderful story with action, passion, massive battles, early struggles, a strong male hero, female hero, a squid hero ... Artificial Intelligence, Evil Bugs (then good), Evil Crystals ... sword fights, extra martial affairs (of necessity - a stallion must roam) it was great...and instead of using psycho VIC as the foil, for another novel, in another never ending series...they destroyed him utterly. Bravo.

Getting repetitive

It was enjoyable but the characters aren’t really growing much and it’s a bit predictable.

Great book

Book 4 brings the series to a temporary end but there is a lot more story ahead. 5 to 6 chapters in the middle of the book are a complete throw-away. There a so many parallels to our current state of governments that it sometimes gets a bit to much.

The beauty of this series is that you enjoy the cast of players and do root for each one of them. I think you will enjoy the series.

pretty good for pedestrian science fiction

light on science, heavy on good-guy testosterone-fueled idealism... pretty good for what most people want in feelgood lightweight science fiction.

If you're looking for depth or something to fuel your imagination this may fair worse. This is publisher candy meant to sell well to sci-fi fans not stand in the annals of great fiction.

The plot is better than most, and I'll get the next one to finish the story for sure.

Great end of the trilogy.

This book was an excellent conclusion to the three books sequence. The authors did such a great job on this that it would be a mistake in my opinion for them to try and continue this series. They wrapped up every loose story arc and brought everything to a satisfying conclusion. Excellent job and highly recommended as long as you listen to the first two books of the series before this one.
