Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

Great Information, Needs Better Narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of Wheat Belly to be better than the print version?

Probably not because it's a lot of scientific information, which, in my case is something easier learned with visuals and time to contemplate and absorb.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It was nonfiction

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Not a bad voice, but he clearly didn't know anything about the material he was reading. He pronounced quinoa "kwi-no-ah" which made me flinch every time. It didn't seem like he was even listening to himself talk.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I really liked learning how wheat has changed over the last 50 years from "amber waves of grain" to 18-inch GMO dwarf wheat and how gluten exacerbates the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Very Thorough

Wow! Medical School meets Weight Watchers. An eye opener. I will never look at Wheat the same way again. I hope that every person whose experience a sickness that doctor will not give a reasoning for and only throw drugs at the symptoms and not a real solution, will consider reading this book. I really believe that this is why America is Fat, Sick, and nearly dead.

Wheat Belly

It is a good book. It is however overly technical in the middle. I know some will and some will not enjoy that.

I feel better cutting out wheat. The last two chapters cover what you can eat.

50 pounds loss since I read this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A moving moment for me was when I realized that just by counting to 20 this diet would be a way to get rid of processed food, milk hormones, and focus on healthy food. I was suprised how easy it was to walk away from carbs. The 50 pound weight loss was a breeze after a lifetime of misery on every other diet in the world. I feel so much better than before reading this book. Thankyou Mr. Davis

Informative & Easy Info

I'd heard variations of this info but it was nice the way it was organized. The narrator does a great job, the book has great info. The basic point is get back to organic veggies, good meats, nuts, some fruits and your body should normalize from avoiding processed, wheat laden foods.

The last two hours for me were the most informative on how to start this program.

A must read

Would you consider the audio edition of Wheat Belly to be better than the print version?

I have not read the book, only listened to audible, but suspect I will be purchasing this book soon to have information at my fingertips. I read it due to a physician I work had recommended it. He is very fit and studies these diets and work-out plans. He is into cross-fit and has a gym. He was right, it is a very enlightening book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just really made me look into the science behind the book to verify the information. It all checks out.

Understanding how wheat can kill you.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Any additional comments?

I was amazed as to the bill of goods we have been sold over the last 50 years.

Please different narrator

The narrator’s voice gives me a fucking headache
He is not interested in reading clearly, he is clearly one of those types who is in love with his own voice
Not interested in speaking for easy listening
Awful way to experience this otherwise great book

This guy should stick to narrating Michael Bay movie trailers

Absolutely Insightful!!

This was an amazing listen and extremely helpful. it took me just under 2wks to finish and during that time I adopted a wheat free eating style and I'm currently almost 8lbs down already, just from cutting out wheat. Incredible!!
