Publisher's summary

The world went silent when the mist came. Following a sonic blast heard around the world as the gates of Aites were thrown open, the mist clung to the mortal world, but it was not empty. Creatures dwelled within the mist, and when the mist left, they remained.

Yet, with the ravagers another came forth. The gatekeeper, Charu strode across the land in hunt of his quarry, those spirits which had broken through the barrier. With his lamp of souls, he moves over the world capturing the spirits and bringing death to those driven to madness, infected by exposure to their miasmatic taint. He will stop at nothing to accomplish his task.

The ravagers brought civilization to its knees, hiding out as an infestation within the city. Meredith was one of handfuls of people left in Ashton, barely clinging to survival as resources ran low. When a shift in power dynamics brings the people under the yoke of the ravagers, Meredith knows that her time may soon be up. She doesn’t anticipate being saved by a dangerous spirit bent on destruction.

Can love bloom and flourish between a grim spirit and a human woman with spirits running in havoc around them, and will their magic together be enough to save humanity from a crippling fate?

*This book contains elements of horror.

Great story, Terrible narrator, DNF

The concepts here are great. It's full of interesting ideas.

But the narrator is truly terrible. I usually don't mind a bad narrator. It doesn't make much difference to me, but I could barely pay attention to this narrator. His voice just muddles together with no inflections.

I'm interested enough to try and read this as an ebook, but it's not worth it as an audiobook.

Slow build but charming

Surprisingly a sweet story where the heroine, Meredith, is unintentionally rescued by Charu, the Gatekeeper. Horns, blue skin, and red glowing eyes are just some of his quirks. He’s got other things going on, too. If you like story and a tryst or two, this is for you. Oh and if you are ok with descriptions of demons ripping into a dude in order to slither in and possess them and whatnot, then this book is for you. Am looking forward to this being a series.

I can finally head to bed....

So, I started this book thinking I could listen to some tonight and the rest tomorrow......well it’s now the next morning and I am finished with the book lololol. Yes it’s that good. It at times can be somewhat confusing if you did not pay attention to the beginning. For me it was not a put on headphones and clean the house book. No with this one I needed to pay attention to the details. Anyway, it is well worth a credit. And a nights worth of sleep.

Such a great story and great characters

I love apocalyptic romance novels so I always get excited when I find one and this one didn't disappoint me. Great characters and story. I was so sad when it ended. Dual povs and an HEA. I'd definitely recommend. Also, if you like this book or these types of books then you really should check out Brenda K Davies series The Road to Hell. The first book is Good Intentions. It's similar to this one where demons escape the portal to hell. There are good and bad demons and the good ones help the humans. There's just way too much for me to explain on here but do yourself a favor and check them out. Make sure to listen to this series too.

I was given an ARC from Audiobooks Unleashed for my honest review.

I read this book a long time ago, I was excited to see it in audible. I was not a fan of the narrator but the story was still good.

You will not be disappointed...

I read this book when it first came out and enjoyed it immensely. The audio version was just as good. JB Burgess did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. SJ is one of my favorite authors and I am glad she chose this one for audio.

Surprisingly Good

It took a couple of chapters to get into e book, but I enjoyed it once I listened for a while. The narration was just right for the story. If you like monsters and quirky heroines, this is the book for you.

Havoc of Souls

This book was pretty good and I was able to finish it in two sittings. For me, some books I can do numerous other things while listening but found with this one, I had to pay attention or I was confused. This book has horror with gore, suspense and romance. There was a nice ending with Charu and Miranda (the hero and heroine) who were a very unlikely couple. JB Burgess did a good job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Couldn’t finish even the prologue

The narration overstressed every one word. The reading was stilted. IT was LIKE this EVERY sentence. I skipped to chapter one to see if it got better. It didn’t. I’m returning this. It’s a shame because the story seemed very interesting. Good luck, everyone. I’m off to see if there’s a kindle version.
