Publisher's summary

Run your first marathon or your fastest with Hansons Marathon Method, the revolutionary training program from one of the best running teams in the world, the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project.

Hansons Marathon Method tosses out mega-long runs and high-mileage weekends - two old-fashioned running traditions that often injure and discourage runners. Runners using the Hansons method will gradually build up to the moderate-high mileage required for marathon success, spreading those miles more sensibly throughout the week. Running easy days mixed with precisely paced speed, strength, and tempo workouts, runners will steel their bodies and minds to run the hardest final miles of the marathon - and finish strong.

In this audio edition, the Hansons program welcomes newer runners with a new Just Finish program featuring a simple schedule of easier running and lower mileage. The Just Finish program sets up first-time marathoners for an enjoyable marathon and a lifetime of strong, healthy running.

Hansons Marathon Method will prepare you for your best marathon:

  • Sensible weekly mileage based on science, not outdated traditions
  • Effective Hansons speed, strength, and tempo workouts paced to achieve your goal
  • Crucial nutrition and hydration guidelines to run strong for the whole race
  • A smart and simple Just Finish program for new runners and marathon first-timers
  • Detailed training schedules for experienced and advanced marathoners

Hansons Marathon Method lays out the smartest marathon training program available from one of the most accomplished running groups in the world. Using their innovative approach, runners will mold real marathon muscles, train their body to never hit the wall, and prepare to run their fastest marathon.

Everything you need and nothing you don’t.

Straight forward, Easy to understand guide running a marathon. Ordered the paperback also because there are a lot of mentions about the diagrams and tables on the audiobook version.

Not just for beginners

I almost skipped this book due to the “just finish” wording that seemed to dominate the descriptions. I found that this book is perfect for runners of all levels and delves deeply into the discipline and physiology needed for success. Great resource.

Lots of great info for beginner to elite

Great book for beginners, but definitely a lot of takeaways for more experienced runners. Always heard a lot about different Hanson’s training elements/principals that groups like NAZ Elite include in their blocks which made me download this one. Fast listen and includes a pdf with supplemental docs. That being said, I still ordered the paper copy of the book as well cause I find it easier to highlight and refer back when needed.

Don’t bother, maybe buy book

Listening to this provided great information on how to train for a marathon. However, it referred to diagrams charts and forms only found in the book which was of no help. I wrote an email asking for help or where to find these documents And received zero response.

Pot. Risky Training Plan with Audio Format Issues

Updated Review 4/9/20: First...my performance results from using the plan, then review of the book. I am an experienced ultra-endurance athlete but was essentially brand new to road running when I started the Beginner Marathon Plan. I was skeptical about the high mileage and massive jump in miles from week 5 to 6, but I was able to manage it. I did a 10K race a few weeks into it to benchmark my pace, and half at week 12, and my pace and predicted marathon finish time was improving tremendously, and my Garmin said my VO2 max was really improving. Then tibial stress fractures and tendon damage let me know I would be taking some serious time off near the end of my second 16 miler.

My take so far...it will make you faster and super fit if you don't break like I did. If I ever redo this plan, it will be modified to increase my mileage more conservatively, and I will aim to accumulate less fatigue and rest more even though that may come at the expense of max speed come race day. (Accumulating fatigue is a key rationale behind the plan.)

I found a lot of really interesting insights and sound information about the rationale behind the workouts that I can apply to future training. If you're a "show me the data" type, you'll like this. That said, maybe it's overreaching for any training book to try to fit both elites and "just finishers" (which is such a diminishing and lame name for a training plan, IMO). While we can both find inspiration in the other's path, they're really not the same, and going too deep into the others' specifics isn't useful and can be demoralizing. I found the book to pretty much ignore the unique issues of being slow, older, and female athletes.

There is very little info for the unique concerns of the older, female, or 5hr+ runner. Honestly, it seems like the author might not have worked with middle aged and/or slow runners. Meb for Mortals and Jeff Galloway are both good supplements and also made me feel a little more like I belonged on this mission.

The audiobook contains a lot of incomprehensible tables rendered in audio form. The supplement .pdf was helpful if disjointed from the listening experience. The narrator made a valiant attempt at reading the many data tables, but they really don't work as audio content.

I ended up buying the first timer book by the same author as I was working through this, partly because it was just too hard to follow the plan in audio-only form. I needed to be able to reference things again. Though a lot of the content is a repeat of this book, it was a bit more empathetic and did include expanded information to include slower runners. If you are doing your first marathon and not aiming for the top 25% of your gender, it's probably a better place to start, though it's not available in audio format yet.
