Rumors and Gossip . . . The lifeblood of London

When Olivia Bevelstoke is told that her new neighbor may have killed his fiancée, she doesn't believe it for a second, but, still, how can she help spying on him, just to be sure? So she stakes out a spot near her bedroom window, cleverly concealed by curtains, watches, and waits . . . and discovers a most intriguing man, who is definitely up to something. Sir Harry Valentine works for the boring branch of the War Office, translating documents vital to national security.

He's not a spy, but he's had all the training, and when a gorgeous blonde begins to watch him from her window, he is instantly suspicious. But just when he decides that she's nothing more than an annoyingly nosy debutante, he discovers that she might be engaged to a foreign prince, who might be plotting against England. And when Harry is roped into spying on Olivia, he discovers that he might be falling for her himself . . .

One of my favorites

I love this book! It is original, funny, and charming. I find myself going back to it time and time again. Rosalyn Landor is (as always) perfect in her narration.

Confused By The Conflict

I found the characters to be very compelling and Quinn's sense of humor is strong throughout. However, the conflict that only comes about in the last few chapters comes across as manufactured and awkward. Sir Harry's internal conflict or Olivia's discovery of Sir Harry's secrets would have served as a much more plausible problem for the protagonists to overcome.

Overall, it was enjoyable but not one I will reserve for my "keeper shelf."

Lovely, fun, lighthearted read...💜

This was a fun read. None of the relationship angst that often plagues a romance, (which isn’t necessary bad, but sometimes its nice to get a break from literary tension! Lol), but just a story of a couple as they fall in love, and a bad guy that Olivia must be rescued from, as well as several secondary characters. Some parts of it were absolutely hysterical, and I definitely laughed out loud. I’m sure there are ample reviews breaking down the story so I won't bother, but I will say that it was worth the credit, for me. Rosalyn Landor did an absolute phenomenal job! There were so many different characters, with various accents, and she made them all unique, and kept excellent track of who was who.

Very sweet and a nice period piece.

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator did a fantastic job with the voices.
There’s even some raunchy bits that are well written so they aren’t trashy or unnecessary.
I’m not usually a fan of romance, but I enjoyed this one.

One of her best!

Excellent in every way! I would highly recommend it! I love both characters and the cuteness of their courtship between their windows is charming.

A pleasure to listen to....

What a pleasure to listen to this warm, and whimsical romance of Harry and Olivia. The allure of Harry's work with the war department, his skill in language and Olivia's beauty and intelligence come alive with Rosalyn Landor's excellent narration. The secondary characters were just as well portrayed. This romance confirms why I love spending valuable time amercing myself in a Julia Quinn novel.

What Happened in the Story

There is nothing overly objectionable about the story. It's just a snore-fest; which is surprising because the author includes several elements that should be, on the surface, exciting. If you're looking for a plodding, but adequate story, this serves well enough. It lacks sparkle and grows tedious at times, but many regencies do. My main problem is that the author had so much to work with; yet somehow, she managed to wring every ounce of excitement from the story, only to replace it with monotony.
