Rumors and Gossip . . . The lifeblood of London

When Olivia Bevelstoke is told that her new neighbor may have killed his fiancée, she doesn't believe it for a second, but, still, how can she help spying on him, just to be sure? So she stakes out a spot near her bedroom window, cleverly concealed by curtains, watches, and waits . . . and discovers a most intriguing man, who is definitely up to something. Sir Harry Valentine works for the boring branch of the War Office, translating documents vital to national security.

He's not a spy, but he's had all the training, and when a gorgeous blonde begins to watch him from her window, he is instantly suspicious. But just when he decides that she's nothing more than an annoyingly nosy debutante, he discovers that she might be engaged to a foreign prince, who might be plotting against England. And when Harry is roped into spying on Olivia, he discovers that he might be falling for her himself . . .

Boy meets girl fairy tale love story that works

I liked this love story because it didn't have the usual "hate each other" or contrived misunderstanding conflict that is prevalent in most romance novels. The couple seams perfect for each other from the beginning and after some witty and fun dialog, they fall in love and fulfill their desires. It is perfect romance that works. The author does a good job of making you feel the excitement of saying the words "I love you" for the first time even though the characters have no doubt they are coming. It just feels good and made the fairy tale real for me.

loved this

it was witty, cute - great character development - a little light on the "deeper spy" stuff, but this was so entertaining and the reader was AMAZING!!!
great read and will read more from this one!

A pleasure to listen to....

What a pleasure to listen to this warm, and whimsical romance of Harry and Olivia. The allure of Harry's work with the war department, his skill in language and Olivia's beauty and intelligence come alive with Rosalyn Landor's excellent narration. The secondary characters were just as well portrayed. This romance confirms why I love spending valuable time amercing myself in a Julia Quinn novel.

Simply Delightful!

Thoroughly entertaining story of historical fiction with a splash of romance and A LOT of humor. The dialogue is outstanding, and the narrator does a exceptional job bringing it to life! If historical romance is your passion, this is the book for you!

Interesting Story

I'm not a romance novel person - but, Ms. Quinn has got me downloading her books. Yes, there's the boy meets girl stuff but the circumstances the characters find themselves in - it's just hilarious! I'm glad to find an author that just doesn't delve in such romantic stuff - she just has a way of telling a story that makes it so funny, too. Pecked to death by pigeons - that's a classic. Oh, and the narration is excellent, too!

What Happened in the Story

There is nothing overly objectionable about the story. It's just a snore-fest; which is surprising because the author includes several elements that should be, on the surface, exciting. If you're looking for a plodding, but adequate story, this serves well enough. It lacks sparkle and grows tedious at times, but many regencies do. My main problem is that the author had so much to work with; yet somehow, she managed to wring every ounce of excitement from the story, only to replace it with monotony.
