Publisher's summary

A “sharp and funny romantic tale” (O, the Oprah Magazine) from the number one New York Times best-selling author of Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers and Apples Never Fall.

Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk.

Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised. It turns out that Patrick’s ex-girlfriend is stalking him. Ellen thinks, actually, that’s kind of interesting. She’s dating someone worth stalking. She’s intrigued by the woman’s motives. In fact, she’d even love to meet her.

Ellen doesn’t know it, but she already has.

My favorite Liane Moriarty book

Loved this one. Great characters and plotting. An entertaining read that stays with you. Even when the characters make terrible decisions you understand why and have empathy for them.

Not bad but not great

This is the kind of cotton candy book is better to listen to while you are doing cleaning or crafting. Solid performance but weak story.

Not Relatable Characters

I loved Big Little Lies, The Husband's Secret and What Alice Forgot. I loved how Liane Moriarty makes her characters so real, somewhat flawed yet so relatable. But not The Hypnotists's Love Story. The characters are too immature, not just how they handle relationships, more on how they deal with real life matters. I was listening to the audio book during my commute and I find myself screaming to my audio all the time, "His stalker broke into his and your house. Why are you not calling the police?"

The stalker, Saskia, whom I know I should feel compassion for, especially given that a lot of the narrative was even written from her point of view. But I really don't. She is insane. And if she is as crazy as depicted in the novel, something more violent or horrific should have happened. If a girl is able to stalking her ex for more than 3 years and keep sending flowers, letters, wine, etc no matter how angry he gets every time he saw her, she is not going to simply smile and congratulates the new girlfriend when she saw her ex proposing on his knees and left.
However, the ending is sweet and satisfactory.

Interesting, Very down to earth

The narrarator was good, able to do various changes in voices for the female characters. the story was interesting. Generally not my cup of tea as the emotions and characters were very human and often fell into self destructive ways. I generally avoid books of that nature to close to my life & reality. Ending was good, hard to see with the author piling up the poo hitting the fan which is how it should be.

I love Liane but

This was a good book but on Audible you can not tell the difference between the two main female characters. The way it is written and read it goes seamlessly from Ellen to the lady stalker. Had to rewind and really pay attention.
It is a good book just not as amazing as her more recent books. And maybe it would have been great in regular book form.

Good but not her best...

I like Liane Moriarty and have several other of her books. This one is enjoyable but not up to the calibre of the Husband's Secret which I read immediately prior.

Not what I expected

There were many times in this book where I thought, "It's going to end here", and then realized there was a lot more time left in the audio book. I liked that the story continued. And when one thing happened and I thought, "know which way this one is going", it didn't always go that way. I thought since this was one of Lisne Moriarry's earlier books I wouldn't like it as much as some of the later ones, but I did.
