Publisher's summary

When she was 9 years old, Melody Browne's house burned down, and it took all of her childhood memories with it. Now she's a single mother of a teenage boy living in Central London. She hasn't seen her parents since she left home at 15, but she doesn't mind. She's better off on her own. She works as a dinner lady at her son's school and has no idea where her humdrum life is heading. But one summer's night, a hypnotist inadvertently unlocks memories of her childhood, and her whole life is turned upside down.

At first, these new memories mean nothing to her, but as Melody slowly begins to piece together the real story of her childhood, she begins to uncover mystery after mystery and wonders if she'll ever know the truth about her past...

Wow! What a tear jerker in the very best way!

I love Lisa Jewell more with every title I read but this one.... it’s just such a wonderful story. Your heart just fills and breaks and fills and breaks again for Melody. You feel her story deeply.
And this narrator is absolute perfection. Perhaps my all time favorite.
If you’re on the fence, get it! What a wonderful journey!

SOOOOO good!

I absolutely loved story! I loved the order that it was told. I loved the characters. I loved the uncommon portrayal of some stereotypes.
I wouldn’t have purchased this book on my own. I’m so glad it was a deal of the day. I have read & listened to a few Lisa Jewell but this was not on my radar. I have a feeling this book will stay with me a while so Thank you

Love this story

This story shows the s how fragile and resilient life can be. It’s a mystery, but with no murder or horror. I recommend this story for anyone who struggles with a complicated past.

Some great dialog! Especially later in book.

For some reason, had trouble staying engaged in first third and didn't like the main character always putting herself down. Actually stopped listening at one point, but later went back to it, and I'm glad I did. Seemed to me the pace really picked up, and as we learn more it becomes more interesting. Really glad I listened, it was heartwarming and ultimately uplifting.

Warm and inviting

A good story well told. I enjoyed the character, Melody, and appreciated how kind and resilient she was. I also loved how her desire to know her past gave her the determination to go to unfamiliar places and have conversations with people she thought she didn’t know and went on to live her truth. This story shows you that family isn’t always blood relations, but has to do more with having people in your life that love you and want the best for you. So glad I picked it; you should too!

Not her best work

I have read a few Lisa Jewell and I really love her other books, this was just too far fetched and I couldn’t feel any sympathy for the main character. She just didn’t evoke any deep feelings and she didn’t seem to care about anyone till the end when everyone was oh so wonderful. Disappointing
