Publisher's summary

The world of Colonial America comes vibrantly to life in this masterful new historical thriller by Robert McCammon. The latest entry in the popular Matthew Corbett series, which began with Speaks the Nightbird and continued in The Queen of Bedlam, Mister Slaughter opens in the emerging metropolis of New York City in 1702, and proceeds to take both Matthew and the reader on an unforgettable journey of horror, violence, and personal discovery.

The journey begins when Matthew, now an apprentice problem solver for the London-based Herrald Agency, accepts an unusual and hazardous commission. Together with his colleague, Hudson Greathouse, he agrees to escort the notorious mass murderer Tyranthus Slaughter from an asylum outside Philadelphia to the docks of New York. Along the way, Slaughter makes his captors a surprising - and extremely tempting - offer. Their response to this offer will alter the course of the novel, setting in motion a series of astonishing, ultimately catastrophic events.

Mister Slaughter is at once a classic portrait of an archetypal serial killer and an exquisitely detailed account of a fledgling nation still in the process of inventing itself. Suspenseful, illuminating, never less than compulsively readable, it is, by any measure, an extraordinary achievement, the largest accomplishment to date from one of our most gifted - and necessary - writers.

Gave me a headache!

Dumbing things down in order to further the plot. Tired old tropes used hundreds
of times in popular fiction and on television.

Outstanding Story Line!!

I am only sorry about one thing:
That I couldn't listen to it all at once. I listened every day, at work, all day long, then while driving home. Great Story & characters!!

Amazing Story And Phenomenal Narrator

I absolutely love Robert McCammon's writing and have been a fan for years. This series with Matthew is amazing! But what also makes the audible version special is that Edoardo Ballerini is the narrator and his voice is magic. His depictions of Hudson and Matthew are perfection and throughout I feel like I'm watching a movie in my head that's how incredible his voice is. A brilliant writer and a brilliant narrator...what more could you ask for!

Awesome series

This has been one of the best historical fictions that I had the please of listening to. As I finish each book my anticipation raises for the next. Gee, if I wake up at 2 in the morning you better believe I’m going to listen to at least 30 minutes of the story before dropping off to sleep. The narration is spot on.

Good story

A little more gory and violent then past stories but still a good listen.

What a ride!

It was hard to push stop on this one-it held me spellbound. Matthew remains one of my all time favorite fictional characters. Robert McCammon does an excellent job of making him real-a believable flawed human living in an equally well drawn historical time and place.

The supporting characters are also three dimensional and compelling; brought to life by Edoardo Ballerini’s masterful narration. I doubt I would enjoy this series nearly as well without him-example of a perfect match of author and narrator.

Mister Slaughter had a much greater affect on me than Queen of Babylon which, for me, failed to meet the benchmark set by Speaks the Nightbird (still my favorite). Many scenes from this third installment are etched on my mind and characters walk by my side or seem to lurk just ahead. I disagree with other reviewers when I assert that every chapter, event, drawn out journey, violent act… felt necessary and right and had its special part in the unspooling of the threads that make up this tale.
