Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

Love the story

Book is great, but the recording has several skips so you're left not knowing what happened in random areas. Customer care says it's correctly loaded and how its "intended". Sorry, but I doubt the writer intended for there to to absolute skips and blanks in the book.

totally entertained...addicted

What did you love best about Dragonfly in Amber?

I listen as I work on my artwork- this story wound me into it's clutches.. I just couldn't stop listening. Needless to say I got a lot of work done. The performance is fantastic. Davina Porter has a lovely, rich voice and developed so many different tones for each individual. She holds each character in a very believeable manner throughout this long story. She has a joyus and soothing quality to her voice. She can tell me a story anytime! Of course I loved the story as well. I had to listen to this after book one!!It is supensful. The characters are complex. The history is interesting to me. The descriptions of living in that time are food for thought. And the romance is a plus !!I love the fiestiness, wit and indepence of Claire throughout. I could do without some descriptions of the torture. It is really so dark. The medical/herbal knowledge is also very interesting to me so there were lots of ways that this story engaged me.yeah!!! onto the next book

What other book might you compare Dragonfly in Amber to and why?

Outlander of course- just as good. My interest in going on with this series reminds me of reading C.S.Lewis when I was a kid....

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

yes- just as good as the first. She is the BOMB!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

too many to point to one. But I love the amount of detail about the hospital in France and the dog assitant !! I love the thread of witchcraft/medicine/herbology throughout.Makes you count your blessings in many ways to consider what they had to work with in those times.

Any additional comments?

Thank you for having these in your collection...I have hours of listening ahead of mewhich is good because I have hours of work ahead of me !

Fantastic

I've been reading this series for over 20 years. I re-read it often. Having it on audio ads a great dimension! I love Davina Porter and enjoy the escape into my favorite series while I am driving or exercising.

wonderful story with fantastic narration

As with the previous book, Outlander, Davina Porter's narration is excellent. I can always tell who is speaking thanks to her various inflections and accents. Diana Gabaldon's writing skills were maturing quite a bit by this second book. The only complaint I have is that poor Murtagh has now been named "Dour Murtagh" in my head because I guess she needed a thesaurus! Sexual content does continue in this volume so be aware in case you like to listen in the presence of others.

After the forth run what more can you say.

I have read the book in print I have listened to audio and I have watched the series. It’s pretty bad when you would rather listen to books you are very familiar with than read the new stuff that comes out
