Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

Featured Article: Outlander Timeline Explained

There are eight audiobooks in the Outlander time travel series, with more planned. Most of the audiobooks are more than 30 hours long, which means the series covers a lot of story. And since the series follows Claire back and forth in time, and sometimes covers both her and Jamie’s timelines simultaneously, it’s a lot to keep track of when you’re listening. It’s almost as dizzying as time traveling yourself! Can’t keep the timeline of Outlander straight? Don’t worry, we’ve got the entire timeline explained, plus the rules on time travel in the popular series.

A Great Sequel to "Outlander"

Where does Dragonfly in Amber rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Dragonfly in Amber is a wonderful continuation of the story of Claire and Jaime Fraser. The entire series is definitely at the top of my list. Davina Porter just does a phenomenal job of staying true to the characters she has depicted so far in Outlander.

Any additional comments?

In this book, I feel as if the story gets a bit long winded. I'm not a fan of abridgment but I believe it could have been edited some before being published. There were some points where my mind would begin to wander and I would have trouble picking up the story again. However, the storyline is still good, just make sure you're not too distracted when listening to it. And it is also vital if you're going to listen to the rest of the series.

Couldn't stop listening!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it is a fantastic story. I listened to it on long runs, whilst doing laundry, gardening, walking the dog...you get the point. I purchased book 3 before book 2 was even finished so I didn't need to wait to continue the story. It is full of adventure and history with strong characters and a good pinch of humour too.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Without the Scottish accents you wouldn't get the same authentic experience. At first in book 1 I thought her voice for Claire sounded too old but once I got used to it I thought she was perfect.

Paris, France and the Frasers - Tres Bien!

What made the experience of listening to Dragonfly in Amber the most enjoyable?

Diana Gabaldon is an epic, historically-driven writer! I fell in love with Jamie and Claire all over again. Add a touch of medicine and a delightful pickpocket and it is a must win! Smart and delectable reading!

What other book might you compare Dragonfly in Amber to and why?

Outlander

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?

But of course - every character. Davina tells this story by adding voices for each character. Her Scottish accent varies with the character and I always know when Jamie is speaking!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - too much good stuff not to mull it around for a while before diving back in!

Any additional comments?

If you haven't seen Season 2 of Outlander on Starz - don't read until after the finale of the season! I think it is much better to watch DIA and then read or listen to the book. I have listened to this book 3 times!

You CANNOT put this book down!

Would you consider the audio edition of Dragonfly in Amber to be better than the print version?

This is a book of romance, historical fiction and non fiction, adventure, thriller, all of these in one place. The narrator Davina Porter is the perfect voice for all of the unique and diversified characters. I will be purchasing all of these books for my lifetime collection! These are my favorite books so far!

What did you like best about this story?

The riveting love story, honor, hardships, and the true purpose and truths to the people living in each era.The historical accuracy and description in almost every scene is applauding but NEVER boring!.

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

Her accents were PERFECT for English, French, Gaelic, and Scottish! She is highly entertaining with her pronunciations and her overall performance

Who was the most memorable character of Dragonfly in Amber and why?

The Duke of Sandringham. He was my most memorable but not favorite character. He played everyone, in every country, and you could never tell his what secrets this man was with holding, and marvelously unpredictable throughout "the Outlander" and " Dragon Fly in Amber".

Any additional comments?

I will be anxiosly waiting to hear and read ' The Voyager".. as to what comes next??
