Publisher's summary

From the powerful imagination of a horror master comes a bone-chilling tale set in a small town where good and evil are joined in a terrifying, deadly battle.

Evil endures....

Once an idyllic Pennsylvania village, Pine Deep awoke one morning to find itself bathed in a massive bloodletting. Twice in 30 years, the townsfolk have endured the savage hungers of a murderous madman—but if the residents think the death of serial killer Karl Ruger put an end to the carnage, they’re dead wrong.

The nightmare never ends....

Bodies mutilated beyond description, innocents driven to acts of vicious madness. A monstrous evil is preying on the living—and the dead—and turning the quiet little town into hell on earth. Their only hope is to find the source. But the secrets that lurk in the heart of Pine Deep are twisted into its very roots. This time the townspeople aren’t just fighting for their lives but for their very souls.

Keep chilled: listen to more in the Pine Deep trilogy.

Malcolm Crow is Another Worthy of a Netflix Series

I loved "Ghost Road Blues" set in the mythical Pine Deep, NJ setting. But Maberry really struck a chord for me as a reader when building Crow's character. Damaged from a troubled childhood that set him on a path where he becomes the reluctant hero, "Dead Man's Song" is the second book in the trilogy. It's a blend of myth, magic and martial arts woven against a small-town backdrop that weaves a great story. Malcom Crow should be right up there with Repairman Jack (F. Paul Wilson) and Juan Cabrillo (Clive Cussler) who are characters who would be awesome on the big screen. Until then...just enjoy Crow and his Crow-nies.

Takes a while but worth the wait

I'm am a recent Jonathan Mayberry fan. I kept coming across the Joe Ledger books and kept passing them by. One day with nothing else to read I got Patient Zero. And here I am.

So I listened to Ghost Road Blues because it seemed like all the Ledger fans said it was such a wonderful trilogy. I was really disappointed. It was a slog to get through it. After listening to 12 Joe Ledger books and short stories, I would say the change of pace was difficult for me, but I still thought the story was worth continuing so I got this book.

It started out slow yet again. Half way through the book though it felt like the narrator found his groove and so did the story. The pace picked up as did the intrigue. The horror of the story also began to make itself felt. I also began to care about some of the characters. Not ones you would think, but new ones like Newt. He was and added character that brought some levity and charm to play off Crow who had moments of depth but had no one besides Saul or Mike to bring that out. Scenes with those two were seemingly short. The last half of the book was really good and I was glad to have gotten it.

So take my review with a grain of salt. The story is good. The narrator is good. I just came from 12 books of Joe Ledger and Ray Porter. My expectations were way way too high and any author or narrator would fail in my eyes. Given time to adjust to a different pace, speed, and perhaps genre, I came around and really liked the story. If I were critical of anything it's Val's and Crow's love scenes. Just... Eh. Perhaps it's the cynic in me. Perhaps I just don't like Val. She hasn't the depth of a real character and her actions and speeches seem forced or placed to try to give her some kind of meaning but I don't feel it. She needs a friend. Someone who brings out her wit, charm, intelligence and badassness we know she has. She just falls flat. Well perhaps I had more to be critical of than just the love scenes. I keep wanting Violin to show up and teach her how to be all those things. Anyway. Enjoy the book.

the Narrator is perfect!

A great follow up to the first. I different pacing than his other series (Joe ledger, Benny imura) which is meant to fit into an overall trilogy. Looking forward to the 3rd. must read for any Jonathan Maberry fan.

You have to read all three!

The first book leaves you wondering a little where it's going, the second is where it starts to gel and gets creepier. The third book is where it all comes together in quite a thriller!!

An awesome Halloween Tale!

The first book is good, the second better. Ready for the third. Mayberry is in great form, and Weiner is just perfect throughout. Well worth the read.
