The first novel of J. R. Ward's New York Times best-selling Black Dagger Brotherhood series features a unique take on vampire lore and heavy doses of sensuality.

The vampire Darius fears for the life of his half-breed daughter, who is unaware of her unusual destiny. To oversee her transformation, Darius seeks help from Wrath, a dangerous loner and the world's only purebred vampire.

Great book, author is maybe not the best

This book required someone who was comfortable with using hip-hop slang easier. He sounded like white bread toast, no butter.

He was proficient but not enticing.

Does this book just end?

I just finished this book, and it just kind of stopped. The last line was "This is just going to kill Fury" then I got the audible message, it seemed to just end. Is this the correct last line of the story? Enjoyed the story very much.

loved it

So far I have loved this entire series - hot sex and an intriguing plot - who would have thought you could bring the two together?? Well worth the credit, well worth buying.

Introduction to the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Where does Dark Lover rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Dark Lover is a solid 4 stars for me. The warrior brothers are strong and sexy, and they fight for their race and the ones they love.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wrath, the blind king, was truly fascinating, fierce, and loveable. At first though, I was totally into Darius. When Darius' story goes unexpectedly off course, maybe that's why it took me a while to get back into the story.... because I wanted Darius back. Also, Butch and V. have the best bromance, full of wit and humor. I loved those two together. The one that has my interest piqued the most, however, is Zsadist. I can't wait to get to his story in book three. Great characters!

Have you listened to any of Jim Frangione’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Once I got used to Jim's voice, it's hard to imagine this narrated by anyone else. It was sometimes tough to determine which of the brothers was talking, but overall well done.

Any additional comments?

Honestly, it took me til halfway through the book for me to decide if I would like it or not. This is a big group of brothers/warriors and several other characters to get to know. Setting all of that up was a big task! I ended up loving the blind king and his new queen as well as wanting to know the rest of their stories, so I'll keep listening to the others. Butch and V were probably my favorites in book one. If you're interested in this series, read this one first! Don't skip it!

The romance is the best.

Who was the most memorable character of Dark Lover and why?

Wrath, complicated and honorable, he learns he deserves happiness too.

Any additional comments?

Narrator is FABULOUS! Takes a little to get used to but once you do Frangione is AMAZING!

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did....

I've been hearing about this series forever, and I'm going to try to continue with it (since it's part of the escape plan), but I'm pretty underwhelmed right now. The idea and the basic story are good, but the romance part is enh. I just can't fall for a H who's a muscular warrior, King of the vampires, protector of his race, member of a bada$$ brotherhood, and yet is a total BETA. And the h is pretty forgettable.

I've heard this classified as erotica, and event though there are multiple sex scenes, I don't think it qualifies for that either.

The narrator is neither good nor bad... he doesn't totally distract from the story, but doesn't add much either. He's mostly just reading it, without much differentiation of voices, and it definitely increases the H's beta vibe, which is NOT a good thing.

Disappointing- feel cheated

I have never read a book that was so “rapey.”
In the beginning the main character Mary told Rage “no” about 1000 times. Don’t think I’ve ever opened up a romance book that had these overtures.

I hate the way the author left everything hanging instead of completing the storyline.

The brotherhood and the characters itself should be the thing that brings people to want to be the next book. (Like the first book… It’s the characters in the story that make me pick up the second book not because there was a cliffhanger)

If I wanted to watch a sitcom, I’ll be watching TV.

Also Zeidist is an interesting enough character that he should’ve gotten fully his own book without the cliffhanger. It’s cheap. There are so many places the plot could’ve grown to fill up the book.

It is only my enjoyment of the first book that kept me till the end.

I wonder if the author redeems her self in the next book?
