Publisher's summary

The New York Times bestselling author of SuperLife and cohost with Zac Efron of the hit Netflix series Down to Earth, Darin Olien offers invaluable advice for addressing the health of our bodies and the health of the planet by identifying common products and behaviors that are harmful and providing alternatives that are non-toxic and life-enhancing.

Fatal conveniences are the toxic products we routinely use and the unhealthy things we do that our culture and corporations have made us believe are safe and necessary for living well and efficiently. These things—from deodorant, cosmetics, dental floss, and sunscreen to laundry detergent, air fresheners, carpets, and crayons to candles, tea bags, cell phones, and chewing gum—are ubiquitous in daily life . . . and they are wreaking havoc on our health and our planet. The environmental toxins found in these products create a cascade of problems, including chemical sensitivities, auto-immune issues, obesity, chronic health diseases, and more.

Darin Olien has spent most of his adult life obsessively researching these “conveniences” and in this book, he raises our awareness of their dangers, demolishes the myth that “if it’s easy, it must also be good,” and gives us alternative choices to take control of our lives and our health. Fatal Conveniences offers a fresh perspective and achievable, small tweaks that will lead to big, life-enhancing changes.

Pretty good.

Would love to see a part 2 featuring more specifics about new, alternative solutions to the toxic products out on the market today.

Lots of good information!

Really enjoyed this listen! Good narrator and information! Lots of what we already know or should know, but just reinforces the message.

Not all information is true.

The information about farming practices is skewed. The way farm animals are housed, is to keep them from killing each other. the amount of fertilizers applied is determined by the manufacturer.
The information about plastics and chemicals was interesting.

Wow! Amazing information on products all around us.

Great reminder of how the world has changed over time and conveniences that we use every day could make us sick. Very enlightening. Fun to listen to also.

Scary and overwhelming but necessary

I’m not new to this subject, so there were times I wasn’t sure I was learning anything new. The more I listened, the more I realized
I wasn’t as knowledgable as I thought. This is a great book for those new to the world of environmental toxins and endocrine disrupters. For those more experienced, there is great information for you as well. While the book left me feeling a tad overwhelmed by all of the “bad actors” we come in contact with, it is necessary to understand what they are and what we can do about them. After listening, I have a new list of products I’ll be purging from my life and my home. Very informative indeed!

Very interesting, very alarming, very overwhelming

This book was thorough and revealing. There is a lot in here about our fraught little world and it quickly begins to feel like an impossible exercise in purity. Thus, it is the listener’s responsibility to keep a cool head and accept that only so much is possible. And I suppose it is each of our tasks to determine which of these recommendations we can tolerate in our own lives. But even though much of what is recommended seems impractical or highly undesirable, I appreciate at least knowing the truth, as it can still influence the way I behave as a consumer and citizen.

The narrator was very competent and the organization of the book was good. At times I wondered if the book was motivated more by environmental concerns than health concerns but that’s OK. Even if it felt heavy-handed in environmental proselytizing, it was certainly balanced by a lot of the information readers most likely purchased the book to learn about. And to be fair, the author takes time to lay out his philosophy on the connection between environmental and personal health concerns.

Very enlightening and many solutions offered

Frightening how much business gets away with putting in their products but at least alternatives are offered in the pdf and sites mentioned in the book
