Publisher's summary

Dr. Gladys McGarey, the centenarian mother of holistic medicine, reveals “a story that teaches as much as it inspires” (Edith Eger, New York Times bestselling author), filled with life-changing secrets for how to live with joy, vitality, and purpose at any age.

Dr. Gladys McGarey, cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association, began her medical practice at a time when women couldn’t even have their own bank accounts. Over the past sixty years, she has pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that has transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world.

Here, Dr. McGarey shares her six actionable secrets to enjoying lives that are long, happy, and purpose-driven:

-Spend your energy wildly: How to embrace your life fully and feel motivated every day.

-All life needs to move: How to move—spiritually, mentally, and physically—to help let go of trauma and other roadblocks.

-You are here for a reason: How to find the everyday “juice” that helps you stay oriented in your life’s purpose.

-You are never alone: How to build a community that’s meaningful to you.

-Everything is your teacher: Discover the deep learnings that come from pain and setbacks.

-Love is the most powerful medicine: Learn to love yourself—and others—into healing.

In a voice that is both practical and inspiring, Dr. McGarey shares her own extraordinary stories and eternal wisdom—from her early childhood in India and a chance encounter with Mahatma Gandhi to her life as a physician and a mother of six, to her survival of both heartbreak and illness. Dr. Gladys shares her inspiring vision for a healthier and more joyful future for us all, filled with “rich and complex truths that will resonate with readers’ hearts and minds” (Dr. Robert Waldinger, New York Times bestselling author).

Critic reviews

"Narrator Elizabeth Wiley impeccably voices indomitable Dr. Gladys McGarey, who provides listeners with inspiration and practical strategies for living with full energy at any age. Listeners are also treated to stories and suggestions directly from Dr. McGarey, which are interspersed throughout the audiobook. As a centenarian who is both a woman and a medical doctor, Dr. McGarey has lived the life of a pioneer. Her compelling stories of growing up in India, the daughter of dedicated medical missionaries, would alone be worth the listen. Wiley delivers McGarey’s messages, including the struggle of dealing with divorce in her 70s, with fitting emotion. Overall, Wiley’s tone and pace communicate the joy and enthusiasm Dr. McGarey has for loving, learning, and sharing her six secrets for the well-lived life." (AudioFile Magazine)

Editorial Review

Life advice from a centenarian
Recently, I've been discovering quite a bit about life expectancy in the news, and let's just say, it's causing me to reflect on my own mortality. That's why this month, I'm listening to The Well-Lived Life by Dr. Gladys McGarey, a 102-year-old physician with more than six decades of experience, who also cofounded the American Holistic Medical Association. Her recipe for being your best self in every moment includes six time-tested secrets such as finding your purpose and embracing love. While Dr. McGarey stresses that she doesn’t have the answers for guaranteeing a long life, her advice does address how to live better, more joyfully, and without regrets. As someone who ultimately just wants to live a more fulfilling life, I'm eager to learn from her wisdom. —Rachael X., Audible Editor

What an amazing life!

Dr. Gladys is such a wise soul! The stories, the way the book is constructed, her sympathy and loving approach to each one of her patients; it’s just wonderful. Publishing a book at any age is overwhelming (I have a family member who has been there) BUT at 102 !!! it’s simply admirable. A Big cup of JUICE to Dr Gladys on this new path! Bravo! May the Divine Juice be with all of us forever! Cheers! only if you read the book you’ll understand this statement :o)

The word doctor means teacher.

Doctor Gladys McGarey's reflection on her century plus life offers guideposts for all of us. Her words of advice on physical, mental, and spiritual health will live to guide current and future generations. At age 70, and a semi-retired physician who shares her diagnosis of dyslexia, she has me working on a 10 year plan for myself. GJBrownDO 7/5/2023 23:11 Pacific

Dr. Gladys Delivered my 6th and last baby.

I am now 88 years old and every word shared is a crystal gem of connection with her and all of life. I understand, and even have a stronger faith than ever because of her frank honesty which actually underlined the deepest parts of her gift. All my children are stellar, but that last one carries a wise twinkle in his eyes that now I see Dr. Gladys imbued
part of her essence to that birthing. How I would love to embrace her. I will pass along the examples she so freely shared that can better spark that love juice that we can generate and pass is forever in her name enhanced by our own. Irenee Riter

Holistic view on finding longevity, peace, and happiness.

The practical advice and experience shared in this book resonated with me. Dr. Gladys had a unique upbringing that formed the amazing person who has blessed our planet for over a century, and her desire to always learn and experience new things is the reason for her wisdom. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the more common sense recommendations that were made.
