Teachings to Cultivate the Practice of Faith

We tend to think of faith as a commodity you either have or you don't. But in many of the world's wisdom traditions, faith isn't something you possess; it's something you do. "Faith is a willingness to take the next step, to see the unknown as an adventure, to launch a journey," teaches Sharon Salzberg. Now this beloved meditation teacher and author shares her unique understanding of faith, distinguishing it from belief and dogma, to help you cultivate this profound force in your life.

In this four-hour program, Salzberg dispels the negative concepts that label faith as either "blind" or "ignorant" and reveals something much deeper: an intelligence and common sense rooted in your deepest experience. With discerning wisdom, she invites you to explore:

  • The crucial first step in the faith journey: embracing impermanence - the ever-changing nature of the world
  • The surprising relationship between doubt and faith
  • How to move forward when you feel lost in the mire of resignation and despair
  • Faith as a refuge for even our hardest times
  • The ingredients of true faith: love and respect for ourselves and others

Faith is the ability to offer your heart to the truth of what is happening, the present expression of possibility, and the conduit connecting you to a bigger reality. With Faith, you gain a powerful tool for cultivating the peace of mind and ease to carry you through any situation.

A Very Easy 5-Star Rating

I loved this book, and in ways beyond anything Sharon’s ever written. There were times I paused in awe of the depth of emotion and effort she took to tell her personal stories in ways I, we her readers, could benefit. I also paused a few times from listening to her voice, and noticing how much she embodies the loving kindness she practices and teaches. I highly recommend “Faith,” and for anyone, from any faith-tradition. Yes, Sharon references Buddhism, but in her ever-best-signature inclusive and considerate way.

I am captivated by the Buddhist view on faith. It is respectful and accessible in a way that no religion is and I appreciate that Sharon Salzberg has an amazing understanding of the path to faith and tells a poweful story .

How we relate to life

One of the best books I've ever consumed on the topic of spirituality, and I've consumed a growing number of them. Sharon is brilliant, clear, and incisive in this book, getting right to the essence of the concepts she lays out, most of all faith.

Some get caught up in the discussion of Buddhism as if that suddenly makes it unrelatable for anybody that doesn't identify as Buddhist, but that's absolutely not true, and not really the point of anything Sharon is teaching in this book. Whatever Buddhist perspectives are offered here are simply takes on the profound truths she lays bare.

Sharon has been a fixture at Ram Dass's retreats for quite some time. These retreats are fundamentally not Buddhist retreats, and yet somehow it does not matter at all, and Sharon's teachings fit right into the Bhakti fabric of those events. Much the same, the ancient and eternal wisdom she transmits in this book can be absorbed by anybody open enough to move past, as she brilliantly weaves into one discussion, our own treasured shiny straw through which we see the vast truth of existence.

Reassuring

When we accomplish faith in our loving nature, we won't need of vanishing words of approval from others to be complete.

Great content; Difficult to listen to narration

Sharon Salzberg speaks in a very monotone voice -- which works very well for her guided meditations but made listening to this book very tedious and, ultimately, made it UNlistenable for me. The content of the book is wonderful, inspiring, and thought-provoking, but I would definitely recommend reading the actual book over listening to the audio book.

faith from a non-sectarian perspective

Short reflections on faith from a non-sectarian perspective, emphasizing Buddhist principles. Sharon Salzberg effectively shares her own life experiences as examples of how we can have faith in ourselves and our fellow humans despite profoundly hurtful events.

[I listened to this as an audio book read by the author. While I love listening to Ms. Salzberg being interviewed, I felt like her narration of this book was strangely flat.]
