Publisher's summary

While her humanitarian husband Liam has been digging wells in Africa, Mara Jacobs has been struggling. She knows she's supposed to feel a warm glow that her husband is nine time zones away, caring for widows and orphans. But the reality is that she is exhausted, working a demanding yet unrewarding job, trying to manage their three detention-prone kids, failing at her to-repair list, and fading like a garment left too long in the sun.

Then Liam's three-year absence turns into something more, changing everything and plunging her into a sunless grief. As Mara struggles to find her footing, she discovers that even when hope is tenuous, faith is fragile, and the future is unknown, we can be sure we are not forgotten...or unloved.

With emotionally evocative prose that tackles tough topics with tenderness and hope, award-winning author Cynthia Ruchti invites you on a journey of the heart you won't soon forget.

Narration

I liked the story, but I found it difficult to follow at times. I liked the way it wrapped up at the end and sometimes for me books are better if I read them instead of listening and this might’ve been one of those books.

Makes one see differently

Read it of you have grief, or if you fear having grief someday or if you simply want to understand better how someone grieving may feel. This story is a wonderful reminder of how God can use even the unimaginable, deepest, scariest trials in our life to bring us closer to His joy, His love, to true life.

Superb all the way around

I heard a podcaster say this book wrecked her in the best way. I bought it, intrigued. She was right. Cynthia Ruchti has a gift for bringing flawed characters through hardship in a humorous, tender way. At the end, the characters are themselves, but better. The narrator was spot on with her characterizations. This story is hilarious and sad and tender. It ended way before I was ready for it to. If ever I longed for a sequel, it’s now, with this book. It goes on my Favorites shelf. A must read.

Promising

It was a good story. I feel like there were some parts that were a little drawn out, but overall it was good.

Thoroughly enjoyed

What a beautiful testimony to friendship amid heart-wrenching grief. The narrator gave perfect inflections and the story and message sucked me in nearly immediately. I will read/listen to everything available from this author.

Great story, ended oddly.

I enjoyed this book, and this author, but the ending for me, fell a little a flat. I got the point of the slow build. It was clear from early on. The end was an extravagant gesture, but somehow felt too casual. It was a great book! Just not my personal favorite.

Masterpiece

I seldom get chills from reading a novel, and rarely does a story inspire me. Cynthia Ruchti got neon so many levels with this story. Fabulous story. Great characters. Exceptional writing. Facing the Dawn is a story of overcoming, soul-searching, redemption, love, forgiveness, and so much more. Thank you, Cynthia.
