Publisher's summary

Mother doesn’t always know best in this atmospheric and twisty novel from the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Flowers in the Attic series and Landry series—now popular Lifetime movies.

When former teacher Paula Eden adopts Faith and Trevor, she is astounded by their natural intelligence and decides to homeschool them to nurture their brilliance. But as the years go on, Faith and Trevor itch for more independence.

When Faith sets her sights on a handsome young man visiting from out of town, Paula grows increasingly desperate to preserve her small family and her plans for the children to carry on her legacy. Luckily, she has a cohort in loyal Trevor, who will do anything to please his mother, even at the risk of hurting his sister and potentially changing their lives forever.

Loved it!

Fantastic book, read aloud beautifully. Only issue is that unless you are aware that there is a sequel, you would never know because the story does not lead you to believe that there is more after it ends.

Choppy

The editing is choppy. Chapters cut off mid sentence. The narrators voice is sometimes the perfect volume and then a word later it’s too quiet or too loud.
There’s quite a few things about the actual story that was a bit off too. Probably due to the choppy editing though

Bad Editing

The story was pretty good and the performance was good, but the editing was terrible. The transition between chapters cut off words. Often I could tell that the sentence wasn't done before I would hear a garbled chapter number, or a new sentence would start. I hope the next book in this series is not like that.

Worst book

The book did Not make an sense at all. Very stupid and I didn’t care for the narrator. I have been a V.C. Andrews fan since I was young but most of the books that have been penned since her death are terrible

Either this book is VERY bad, or I’ve outgrown VCA

The writer uses a LOT of superfluous words to tell a very poorly developed story. There’s also a ridiculous amount of plot holes. Because of those plot holes as well as the extremely weak and EXTREMELY annoying main characters, I could not force myself to finish the book. I made it through 4 hours but could not keep going because absolutely NOTHING was happening to advance the plot. The tone of the book (at least the part I could get through) kind of reminded me of My Sweet Audrina—the only VCA classic I disliked—but this book was so much worse. I think if the ghostwriter had spent more time fleshing out the backstory instead of repeating the same details over and over…and over…it could have been marginally better. The narrator was okay, she just spoke a little slowly for my taste so I had to adjust the playback speed. In summary, this audiobook was a big fat DNF, because the older I get the more strongly I feel that life is too short to spend it reading or listening to bad books.

I’m a little disappointed that I cannot return it because Audible no longer accepts returns for books that were not purchased with credits (BTW, what the heck, Audible?!?!). The price of the book was less than it is for one credit, so I used my credit for a more expensive book that will, hopefully, be more entertaining.
