Publisher's summary

Dead men tell no tales.

Until they meet ghost hunter Verity Long.

Verity Long is proud to say she gets along with just about anybody—dead or alive. But she’s put to the test when her well-meaning boyfriend and her sweet-as-pie sister con her into a remote island “double date” weekend with her sister’s new flame and Verity’s long-time nemesis, Alec Duranja.

Her plans to avoid the uptight police officer go up in smoke when the four of them team up for a weekend treasure hunt competition based on the island’s legendary pirate past. And it doesn’t take long for Verity and her team to discover more than game clues. Someone is using the game to dig up real pirate gold...and they’re willing to kill to keep it.

There’s no escaping the island or the game. And when the killer targets someone Verity loves, she realizes she’s the only one who can uncover the truth behind the legend. She must stay one step ahead of the dangers of the island and two steps ahead of Frankie’s new ghostly pirate buddies—all in a race against time to solve a centuries-old puzzle and take down a real live killer before he strikes again.

Angie Fox’s light and humorous mystery books provide the perfect escape from the stress and responsibilities of adulting. I highly recommend this series.

Great story

I love these books. My only complaint is the story of Frankie’s urn. It is not consistent at all!

Needs more Frankie!

This was my least favorite book of the series but I still enjoyed it. The writer and narrator are amazing as always but the subject matter and setting of this one just wasn’t my favorite. Maybe bc it didn’t take place in Sugarland for once! And Frankie’s appearance is minimal until the end.

I love the incorporation of Melody as I feel her sister has been very underutilized. The idea to hitch her to Verity’s enemy was very clever. Duranga’s voice annoys me, not sure if it is supposed to but way too much of him in this book! And how could Melody date someone who thinks her sister is an outright liar or worse, a complete lunatic? This really annoyed me but all’s well that ends well.

A big issue I had with this one was the absence of Frankie though he certainly makes up for it by the end. I loved the pirate love story and every scene with Pearl. This is the first time I just couldn’t get into the other characters. I found all the other players super boring or annoying, especially the twins. I also think the writer has completely dropped the notion of Verity doing her ghost hunting for a living bc I can’t remember the last time she was paid. Shouldn’t this matter?

I had a hard time telling certain of the players apart, not bc of the voices but the descriptions. The one who feigned dead toward the end, I still don’t even understand how that happened outside of Romeo and Juliet. Even if the doctor was in on it, Verity and Alec have seen enough corpses that this farce should not have occurred. Confused why it was integral to the plot anyway.

I will absolutely keep reading this series but I hope they don’t venture from Sugarland again, it was like the crux of the story was missing. I also hope Verity starts going on paid jobs and that Frankie never leaves! I would also love for Melody to remain as present as she was in this book.

Another Great Story!

Loved the mystery and that the plot did not follow a similar pattern to previous books. The only complaint I have is they Alec’s and Frankie’s voices sounded very similar. Otherwise, we’ll done Angie and Tavia!!

Better than some of the previous ones

I really enjoyed this one! The island, pirates and further development of the core relationships to the story really made this story entertaining. Plus there were not as many TSTL moments for the main female character as in previous books for which I am glad.
Tavia is a great narrator, really makes things exciting and does male character voices better than most female narrators I’ve listened to so far.
