Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Kayvan Novak, Josh Cohen, Alistair Petrie and Richard Hughes.

Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the ageing Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety.

Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature with which its disordered protagonist is obsessed.

Outstanding

I often laughed out loud! I did not expect such humor! I’m sorry I don’t speak/read Spanish. I’ve heard that humor doesn’t translate as well as other genre!

Glad I listened

I got a little impatient with all the side stories and I felt that Cervantes had so much in his head he was cramming it in. Sancho Panza was delightful and I admired Don Quixote. His wisdom was clear.
The world could use a knight like he was.

absolutely great

The best novel I've ever had the privilege of listening to. A great translation - indeed it should be considered the definitive english translation.
All my homies dig it.

Long story, but an entertaining one

I thought it was very well done. I have not read it in spanish. so this opinion only comes from this being the first time I've gone through this novel in the English language. I was surprised at the various parts when Don Quixote - and the other characters - did not have the same voice. However, that's easily adjustable. Some of the wilder depictions of characters are much appreciated in aiding the listener with how we're supposed to perceive that character

It's a LONG story. But very well worth it and very well presented. Recommend.

Slow to very slow at times

I enjoyed this book even though I found some parts very boring. I found hard to enjoy the critique of literary genres and the poems but loved the quirky humor which pervades the book and makes it unique.

Greatly amusing and astonishingly fun

A spectacular tale perfectly translated and brilliantly performed by the readers. A wonderful experience. One of the first things that surprised me was how quickly I got used to the British accents and then how well they worked to tell the story. Then I was astonished at the vision of a lively past that the story provides. Hours and hours and hours of listening pleasure.

Absolutely wonderful

I’m not sure I can even find words to say how much I loved this audiobook. There’s the novel itself, of course: sheer genius from one end to the other, riotously funny and deeply moving at the same time, and about as “meta” as they come. And the translation, graceful, idiomatic, and punchy: no Knight of the Woeful Countenance here; he’s the Knight of the Sorry Face. And the songs rhyme. But the real pleasure for me came from the masterful reading by the team of narrators. I didn’t keep track of who read which part, but ultimately it didn’t matter, because they were all outstanding. The conversations between Knight and Squire are nailed cold. The introduction is included, one of the best decisions Penguin made when they began this series: it adds immeasurably to the value of each title. This one includes a discussion of the problems of translating the novel. I can’t wait for the memory of this experience to simmer long enough to make me want to listen to it all over again.
