The Best in the Series Ruined by new Narrator

I have listened and reviewed Books 1 - 4, now I'm on book 5 and find myself in a quandry. I have to say that the new narrator, a woman this time, was horrible and ruined the listen. I had to listen twice to be able to really pay attention to the story and ignore how bad the narration was.

The story is the best in the series! Honestly! A marine troop is standed 9 lightyears from Earth, and Henry is their only hope. This one was action packed, as well as having Henry go through a variety of emotions and feelings about the mission and his performance. Mr. Alesso really put a lot into this one and it pays off.

I see that Rich Miller is back as narrator for Book 6. which I will be reviewing shortly. Thank the stars!

Terrific Series!

I have been thoroughly enjoying this exciting and imaginative series. The characters have depth and are engaging. The action, space battles and political intrigue grabbed and held my attention. In this fifth book, the honorable Captain Henry Gallant continues to use his unique creative strategic ability to thwart the plans of humanities alien enemies while struggling against prejudices and discrimination from among some of his peers, superior officers and self-serving politicians. Although the narrator for this book is different from the first four books in the series, I enjoyed listening to Jennifer Groberg. She has a variety of tones, timbers and emotions to her voice and her reading was flawless. I was provided a free review copy of this audio book and am voluntarily leaving this review.

The Narrator Ruined It

As I said in my review of the previous books, the story is OK. However, the narrator was atrocious. She couldn't pronounce anything correctly (analasist? really?). Not the best series I've listened to - no Honor Harrington by any means - but not the worst.

The Politics Can Be Deadlier than the Actual War

Politics becomes much more important in the Henry Gallant series with this latest book, and Alesso’s handling of it rises to the occasion. Admirals are trying to disregard Gallant’s reports on enemy activities and capabilities because they do not support their preconceived notions. This obviously does not bode well for humanity as the next big battle in the war against the Titans commences. As usual, Gallant is smack in the middle of the action.

In this volume, Alesso also introduces a new wave of fighter pilots, each with their own personality quirks. Gallant has trained these men and women to fight and now must lead them in war as they try to reinforce stranded marines despite the incompetence of the commanding admiral.

I think the best addition to this novel was the ground action focusing on the marines. Alesso has always done a good job with the naval action, but now he shows a flair for ground combat as well. The battles move quickly and were always exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing more.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Good book ruined by atrocious narration

I would not have finished this title but for the fact that subsequent books in the series are not narrated but this bumbling incompetent. I am honestly surprised that she managed to secure employment as an audiobook narrator. I lost track of all the mispronounced words and the monotonous tone did the author’s work no favors. Please, dear God, do not let this person narrate anything else.
