Publisher's summary

From trauma educator and somatic guide Kimberly Ann Johnson comes a cutting-edge guide for tapping into the wisdom and resilience of the body to rewire the nervous system, heal from trauma, and live fully.

In an increasingly polarized world where trauma is often publicly renegotiated, our nervous systems are on high alert. From skyrocketing rates of depression and anxiety to physical illnesses such as autoimmune diseases and digestive disorders, many women today find themselves living out of alignment with their bodies.

Kimberly Johnson is a somatic practitioner, birth doula, and postpartum educator who specializes in helping women recover from all forms of trauma. In her work, she’s seen the same themes play out time and again. In a culture that prioritizes executive function and “mind over matter", many women are suffering from deeply unresolved pain that causes mental and physical stagnation and illness.

In Call of the Wild, Johnson offers an eye-opening look at this epidemic as well as an informative view of the human nervous system and how it responds to difficult events. From the “small t” traumas of getting ghosted, experiencing a fall-out with a close friend, or swerving to avoid a car accident to the “capital T” traumas of sexual assault, an upending natural disaster, or a life-threatening illness - Johnson explains how the nervous system both protects us from immediate harm and creates reverberations that ripple through a lifetime.

In this practical, empowering guide, Johnson shows readers how to metabolize these nervous system responses, allowing everyone to come home to their deepest, most intuitive and whole selves. Following her supportive advice, readers will learn how to move from wholeness, tapping into the innate wisdom of their senses, soothing frayed nerves and reconnecting with their “animal selves".

While we cannot cure the painful cultural rifts inflicting our society, there is a path forward - through our bodies.

Amazing! Life changing book

I highly recommend this book. There were parts that were hard to listen to while multi-tasking as the book has numerous deep thoughts and insights. I wasn’t able to give it undivided focus, but am glad I made it though the parts that were harder to maintain momentum with. I will refer back to this book and share lessons I have learned with friends and my partner.

Really wonderful information

I felt like she was speaking directly to me about me. The information really resonated with me. I'm going to buy the text copy of the book too.
I'm dyslexic, so that's why I prefer audiobooks. Usually I prefer books like this to be read by the author. Not the case for this one. I'm not docking any stars because I think that's totally unimportant to the book. I listened to a podcast with this author and her tone was sweet and conversational, but it's hard to read a book in a conversational tone. I do think this author could have done well to hire a professional to read her book, but again, the information is what this book is all about and I'm so thankful for the time and effort she went through to learn and share this knowledge.

Incredibly important nervous system understanding from a female lense

Incredible read full of practical examples, stories and tools for understanding the female nervous system in a world currently attempting to erase the feminine & claim no difference between men and women.

I have gifted this book to several friend and have participated in multiple rounds of Kimberly’s Jaguar course which I highly recommend, especially if you want to deepen your understanding or prefer live learning.

This is a MUST read for trauma integration!

Holy smokes! I listened to Call of the Wild in 1 1/2 days while cleaning, organizing and gardening. Stopped to be in my body several times. The Call of the Wild is a priceless gift to my soul. It is every bit if not MORE important than Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk’s masterpiece The Body Keeps the Score. It’s going on my recommend list and now I am diving in to the hard copy. Thank you for sharing THIS vitally important roadmap for understanding how to integrate trauma, for bringing PEACE and wholeness to my BODY by helping me fully embrace every important aspect of my nervous system. And thank you for sharing the HOPE of what is to come from fully embracing myself—beyond the reckoning I know I will realize restoration, reclamation, and reimagine a whole new way of LIVING in the safety of my mind/body/soul. Deep bows for your courageousness.

Practical info to build capacity and enjoy life

I really appreciate her modern take in the face of some current cultural trends that bypass actual feelings and wash everything over with "good vibes only" or the opposite that tend to go so into "the down" that get stuck there leaving no room for pleasure or getting into the blue, as she frames it. Her perspective on building capacity to enjoy the life that runs through us is delivered thoughtfully and with respect for the individual. I also like how she gives time to discuss "fawn" as many only cover fight/flight or freeze. I've been practicing somatic therapy for a few years and attempted to listen to Peter Levine's book but I find Kimberly's much easier to navigate. She is incredibly well researched not only summarizes and re-frames many of the greats, but her original ideas apply perfectly to the now.

Finally, I appreciate that she took the time to narrate so it would be in her voice, emphasizing the parts she finds most important. I'm also enjoying the accompanying PDF materials in the "Chapters" section called PDF Enhancements. Couldn't download on my phone but it worked on my computer.
